frat pledging

im just wondering what kinda stuff frats make new commers do during pledging/

Most of them don't talk about it too much. If you think you're gonna pledge a top house, you'd better be ready to have a rough semester.

Cavalier is right, pledgeship is often secret so you won't get any info asking on a college forum. The difficulty of pledgeship really depends on the frat you pledge, and some don't have it at all.

Don't worry too much though - hazing is illegal nationwide and most colleges with Greek systems have been seriously cracking down on it.

hazing is pretty common here at UVa......

Well in that case I guess the frats who haze over at the other university of virginia just have to hope no one turns them in, if it is that commonplace and everone knows about it.

Dima, frats at W&L haze, too...

hazing is a good thing, if you think not ur a puss.

let's be frank, most fraternities in southern school haze their pledges.

icic. so whats hazing?

That's true, a lot of this depends on your definition of hazing - by the very strict definitions often in use today, there may be only a couple of frats that don't haze at all.

All fraternities haze. . .I know certain ones have national chapter regulations that forbid it but it will still occur. For instance, Zeta Beta Tau "abolished pledging" in 1989 or something because of hazing and at my college they're probably the second worst fraternity as far as hazing and what they do to their pledges during pledgeship.

I'm almost certain that one thing they can't do anymore (if they could ever do it[?]) is hit you with a closed fist, so you don't have to worry about that (open palm is a different story, but that doesn't hurt)

Dima is right, though. I can't, and I doubt others will, really speak about what we've experienced during pledgeship but it's definitely worth it in the end.

Ecliptica, you're almost completely right - Sigma Nu, which was founded as part of a rebellion against hazing at Virginia Military Institute here in Lexington is now known as one the most hardcore southern frats and I'm sure hazes quite a bit.

There is one frat down here who says they do not haze and live up to their word. Apparently, one person even got kicked out because he wanted to be hazed this year and haze the next. I'm not advertising for them, its not my frat but it is called Sigma Phi Epsilon for those interested, known as SPE on the campuses where its still just a regular old frat (it was here until they had their charter revoked) and Sig Ep on campuses where they have their 'balanced man' program and don't have a real pledgeship (which is what they call themselves now that they're recolonized here_.

Well ive heard about all kinds of things. Mostly fear factor kinda things. but i also heard about getting butt naked and getting hit in the ass with the board?

I've actually heard that paddling was an outdated practice that frats have mostly abandoned and that most paddles at frat houses are now ceremonial . . . I could be wrong though

I think it would be better to leave official greek letters out of these responses. It's not fair to connect the controversial process of 'hazing' to a national fraternity (or sorority) name. Just food for thought.

<3,

Izzie Bear

I haven't accused any fraternity of hazing. All I've said is that Sigma Nu was founded against hazing and that I thought they probably hazed, I have no way to be sure if they do. I also mentioned Sigma Phi Epsilon in that they don't haze.

HAHAHAHAHAHA ok reread this and try agian lol

...hahah, 10 characters

that depends on what you consider hazing... Ive heard of some fraternities having pledges get up at 5 in the morning and running 3-5 miles down a parkway. Ive heard of other stories where fraternities have encouraged illegal activities and have said that if u get caught... they want nothing to do with u.

touche, ignore my previous post - it's just kinda a mess

I am just going to try to save myself here and ask that all my posts on this thread be ignored - I do not know of any fraternity that promotes hazing.
