I have been accepted to Penn State, Florida State, and Ole Miss. One thing that I am really looking forward to is joining a fraternity. I know I would be fine at Penn State because I am friends with active brothers, but my concern comes with the southern schools (specifically Ole Miss). I am from PA and I was wondering if being an out of state at southern schools is a big deal for getting into a fraternity. I have just heard that they don’t like out of state kids, but I’m sure this isn’t true for every house.
I’m currently an SEC fraternity member, here’s what I can say:
- Top houses (KA, SigNu, SAE, KSig) at Ole Miss probably wouldn't consider you if you weren't from in-state and if they did well good luck making it through that pledgeship, you'd more than likely get singled out from the rest of your pledge classy.
- FSU and PSU's Greek Life are basically the same. There's no stigma around Southern tradition, but those schools absolutely rage face, and at that point substance abuse and safety become a factor to think about. Only thing that differentiates them is that pledgeship at PSU I hear is close to nonexistent, whereas I hear at FSU some pledges can get absolutely violated.
Pick a school based on your interests and where you actually see yourself getting a good education as well as having fun during down time. Also during rush, pick a group of guys that you can actually see yourself calling brothers, not just the ones that throw the biggest ragers or pull the hottest girls, I know a lot of friends that absolutely hate their house because they picked it based on status rather than brotherhood.
Good luck bro.
