What is the lowdown on the fraternities? Which are good and what are some of the general stereotypes of each?

Also, what is the best way to approach rush as someone who doesn't know any upperclassmen?

Also, what is the best way to approach rush as someone who doesn't know any upperclassmen?

You’ll get to know the upperclassmen. They will make sure of it. Since rush isn’t til Winter Term, you’ll have plenty of time to get to know the various fraternities and form your own opinions on them.

fraternity rankings are pretty arbitrary and often the best frat for one person will be the worst for another, with that being said the fraternities are grouped into three groups that cross rush the most with each other, within each group the frats are arranged alphabetically.

KA-plenty of football players, mostly linemen

PhiDelt-football players, some basketball players

PhiKap-almost exclusively laxers

SAE-southern gentility, almost no athletes

SigmaChi- pole three frat, well respected among girls

Beta-basketball players, rugby players

Fiji-cross country fraternity

lamda-wanabe politicians

PhiPsi-random fraternity

Pika-formerly the swimmer frat, not so much true anymore

PiPhi-mix of athletes, a little random

Chipsi-international fraternity

Kappa Sigma-coming back on campus, but would expect them to look something like Sigma Nu

Sigma Nu-nerdy fraternity

Sig Ep-muscian fraternity, borderline hipsters

Interesting, any one want to take explain sororities? Do they tend to group by geography or by interests?

Sorority rush is COMPLETELY different from fraternity rush, and you don’t really “rush” a particular sorority. My advice would be to join lots of clubs to meet the upperclassmen, and keep an open mind.

You and your friends will be asked to go to coffee or lunch with sorority women. Go on these. It’s actually a rush date, and it’s the best way to get to know them.

There are stereotypes, but they’re mostly meaningless, as there are girls in every sorority that fit others’ stereotypes and/or flaunt their own.
