Very disappointed that UD allows the boys to rush Fraternities in the Fall. The Sororities rush in the Spring. I think it is very disruptive to new Freshman that are just finding their way, to have the stress, possible disappointment and diversion from academic pursuits three weeks after they arrive on campus. It also limits their opportunities to try a variety of extra curricular options. I have to say that I have been very happy with the way UD has handled most processes this far but this one needs a review in my opinion.

I agree… so glad the girls rush in the spring… I know in “the south” frat and sorority rush takes place even two weeks before fall semester. I think it’s crazy… how can you know who you are or where you best fit when you don’t know a thing about anyone around you or what you do or don’t like at your school. I feel this way for every school, not just UD.

I’m a big proponent of second semester rush. I understand and respect others don’t share this opinion. My S2s school has deferred rush. Their Greek system is far from perfect, and I’m not holding them up as an example, but this part I think they get right. S2 was very clear in what he felt would be a good match (and not) based on his own opinions, not rumors and generalizations. He was more confident and had a stronger sense of self. Fraternity rush is more a mutual selection then the strict guidelines of sorority recruitment. It was the right choice for him that I wish was available to more young men and women. Some even decide that the groups they join first semester fill that social side as well (acapella groups, faith based, service organization, etc) and Greek life isn’t for them.
