Freaking out about AP scores

Ok, I took AP ENG 3 last school year and received an A in the class. However, on the AP test I got a 1. I'm scared because I'm an honor student in all my classes. It was my first AP test and I'm applying to prestigious schools and don't know what to do. I really want to get my test rescored but what if it comes back the same and I just waisted more money? What should I do? I'm scared to tell my mom, and I'm scared on how it will affect me getting into any school, ivy or not. Any advice?

Calm down, it was your first AP test. You don’t have to report your AP scores to colleges if you dont want to.

would you recommend me retaking it this upcoming school year?

Maybe rescore it, it’s pretty hard to get a 1

My friend who’s in college told me most colleges only take 1 year of english so I could just make up for it on the AP eng 4 exam. Any truth to that?

See if you can get the score checked out. After finishing the exam, did you feel confident?

no I didn’t feel to confident after the multiple choice. the writing yes. My writing would always get 7 and 8s in class. but the time crunch in the multiple choice always f’s me over, even in class during the practice. I only make to question 33 and ran out of time. I thought my writing would get me atleast a 2

What is your plan to do better on the AP Eng 4 exam?

A in class, 1 on test means that you should be questioning the quality of your high school’s classes.

I was freaking out over the same thing as you, although I got a 2. You can choose not to send the score, it doesn’t play a role in college admissions. They’re only used for gaining college credit.

Don’t pay to have it rescored. You admit that you did poorly on the m/c portion which is where an error might be large enough to raise your score substantially.

How do students from your high school typically do on the AP exam? Perhaps your teacher will have some insight into the reasons for your performance.

While I realize that posting on a discussion is a casual form of communication, using obscenities, even abbreviations for them, is NOT clever and cute. It reflects a poor vocabulary and is offensive. If you used this type of expression on your AP exam, your score likely reflects it.

On the bright side, AP scores are not reported on any college applications. This will not impact your chances of admission.

[AP Pass - AP English Language Calculator](AP English Language Test Score Calculator - AP Pass)

Check that out, play around with the numbers, see if it’s possible you actually could have received a 1… I disagree with Rmldad. As you can see by that calculator, if you got a 5 on each essay and just EIGHT questions correct, you still would get a 2. Collegeboard does make errors. A 1 is pretty rare for a student who did well in the class.

Your score doesn’t really matter for college admissions but a good score can save you from taking a class in college.

@Pancaked - neat link! That is the kind of information that I love about CC. I had heard that College Board used a formula, but I had no idea that someone had published it.

Still, I stand by my recommendation. Raising the score to a 2 is possible, but I don’t know of any colleges that give credit for a 2. Many schools do not even give credit for a 3. Unless the high school teacher has a record of high scoring students and is surprised at OP’s low score, I think OP would be better off saving the money of a rescore and preparing for next year’s exam.

thanks so much for responding everyone. @rmldad I have no idea how students on my school do but many of them weren’t doing well on the practice AP exam packet. PLus I really don’t feel like having it rescored.
@kctaxguy I just moved to Texas so I hope my new teachers will prep me better and I will study on my own instead of just doing classroom prep work
@pancaked Thanks!

Don’t worry! My friend is in the same boat as you… a 1 on the exam. Her GPA… 4.6! Totall does NOT balance…

Why don’t you try AP Lit? I started out as a weak English student, I improved this year (did not take AP Lang) and what a miracle it was when I learned that there was a spot waiting for me in AP Lit… I hear the exam is much easier and it’s an easy test to prepare for. At my schools the students all pass. Reason why they do AP Lang first is because they feel that if it were the other way around, nobody would take AP Land, which I believe would be true. Everyone hated it lol.

Good luck!

Yeah that’s how it is at my school. English 3 is English Lang and English 4 is Lit.
