Freaking out b/c AP World won't fit into schedule!

Hello CC'ers! I know this may seem trivial to you, but I'm a rising sophomore and my guidance counselor just emailed me saying that I can no longer take AP world since it won't fit into my schedule, and that now I have to take Accounting as an elective instead of doubling up.

I know this sounds nerdy, but I was REALLY looking forward to taking AP world and since I'm doing it soph year, it looks good on my transcript. Any advice? Do you think I should email my AP world teacher since I had her freshmen year, asking for advice? I want to email back my guidance counselor seeing if there was an exception, but I'm not sure.

Please help!!

From the wording of your post, it sounds like other people at your school take AP World after sophomore year. I know it’s always hard to realize at the time that something isn’t that important, but this is certainly not a crisis worthy of freaking out. Just take it next year like the other kids. It really doesn’t matter on your transcript which year you take the class because different schools and counties have different standards for when classes are taken. If you take it in sophomore year, not a single college is going to look at it and be impressed by your taking initiative, seeing as a large portion of the country takes World in sophomore year. Similarly, no college will look at your transcript and reject you for taking it in junior year because that’s the norm for many people as well. Taking both AP US and AP World at the same time (which I assume is what you meant by “doubling up”) doesn’t look impressive at all on a transcript if it means you then have no history class in subsequent years.
Also, even if you really do think that taking this class will determine your entire future, it sounds like there’s really nothing to be done about it, so there’s no point worrying. Emailing your teacher won’t help you get into a class like it does in college; if the counselor says it’s full, it’s full (unless you can work it out with him/her).
Sorry if this post came off as overly harsh, I just really think you need to calm down. It’s fine to email the guidance counselor and politely ask if there’s a way to fit world into your schedule, but if they still say no, then you just need to deal with the schedule you have.

lol don’t freak out man. i’m an upcoming sophomore as well.

if you really want to take it, make an appointment with your counselor to see what you can move around to make it work; just make sure you let it get across how much you want to take the class. if in the end you can’t, just take a breather and be more prepared next year.

meet with you GC, express a REAL interest 98% chance they’ll make something work

Most of the time asking what your options are helps you a lot. Just emailing one of the administrators at my school got me moved into an elective I love. So just ask what other class you would have to move around or give up
