Freakish High # Applications this Year?

Don't know if it's situational or larger trend...but the number of apps to UVM from my son's school has blown up! Almost 60 applications and we're from OOS!!! He applied in Sept and was accepted in December, and I think a lot of kids who applied from his school with similar stats, but applied later, got deferred? I don't know if they "limit" the number of kids they accept from any one school (or would admit to it if they did) But has anyone else noticed this increase from last year (maybe via Naviance?)

He was thrilled to have been accepted and seemed to have honed down his list to UC Boulder and UVM. I, as a mom, want him to stay closer to home, and as such am pushing the UVM option. BUT NOW he says it's lost it's luster cause "too many kids from his current school will be there". He seems to really want to push his life experiences and environment "outside his current box" I strong armed him to applying to Penn State, which he fussed about (even though it meets many of his criteria) because his projected "too many kids from my school" argument.

Ironically, Penn State apps were way down!!!! This happening elsewhere or is it just a big "buzzzzzz" school for us this year? It's always popular. And for privacy sake, pls don't mention any specific high schools so much as "areas". I'm very curious.

Don’t know about apps but I have one kid at UVM and the other just graduated from CU. Both like their schools, but younger one is aware that, student wise, its not all that different than her suburban Boston HS. Not that Boulder is hugely diverse but there is more of a “being away” sense. The distance to CU was not a huge problem; Jet Blue is (was) reasonable and we saw D for most vacations, and got out there a few times as well. Costs a bit and one can’t be spontaneous, but it worked out ok. I think CU is better for sciences and engineering, if that’s something he is interested in.

If you really want him to go to UVM, let him know its about 2:1 female to male, or at least seems that way to my D.

drb: Many thanks for your response and insight. it’s becoming apparent that, he’s going for that “Being away” thing. I noticed the stats with the dudes vs. girls…I see 56/44 but that’s for freshman, but if you were a guy…why would you ever leave??? My eldest is at NYU a school NOTORIOUS for bad female/straight male ratio. At the time she had a boyfriend of 3 years and the idea of them breaking up seemed IMPOSSIBLE! She’s spending junior year at NYU London just for that smaller school…better ratio experience! That said, when she was in Manhattan (12 miles away) we only saw her when she was sick or in town to see her that-time beau…she might as well have been in Boulder!

Applications to UVM in our school seem to be pretty popular this year, but maybe only because UVM sent out a lot of ‘VIP’ appliations? Also, a few student’s siblings here go there, which makes them feel more comfortable applying to it.

there’s an article on the new york times choice blog about the rise in applications to selective colleges this year. They don’t list the stats for UVM but some schools have had substantial increases for instance U Conn apps are .up 25% this year. in my home state of PA applications to Penn State were up 6.8% they had over 50,000 apps this year. the nyt article is linked over on the U Conn forum I don’t know how to link it here. Some speculate that students are applying to more schools because the common app makes it so easy, others say students are shopping around for the best financial deal, others say some kids are reacting to the increasing selectivity in admissions and applying to more schools, a problem which feeds upon itself. It would be interesting to see the stats for UVM but they didn’t list them. Bottom line, more kids may end up on waitlists this year at selective colleges.

I have twin daughters who are juniors at UVM. I have to agree with your son about Penn State, which is way too big and has alot of classmates going. However, Vermont is the school to go to for the polically correct, outdoorsy boy. Awesome socially, academically and beautiful My girls are in the honors program which is a great thing if you are going into a grad program. Their business school is great, and many students there are into the sciences and premed. They have a first class medical school and health center. However, my girls are very focused, and seem to be able to study (hard) even though the social life there is fabulous. Burlington is gorgeous, the food all organic, the college very proactive about safety, and security. They are very generous to their best students, as the scholarships are there, as well as may other work opportunities. As long as your boy can balance school and social life it is divine.

I go to a HS in Boston and probably half of my senior class have applied to UVM and/or UNH for Fall 2011, they come to my school every year and it is appealing to most of the students who want to get OOS.

tudor (lovin the name) he’s gonna be a business student, so that’s good news about the school (which I hadn’t heard much about) He will not be one of their “best students” (please, please don’t think I’m horrible) A plenty good student but he wants a school with a rockin social life. Is the school very Greek? Do a lot of the kids get way to ski or snowbaord? In addition to drb’s great suggestion that I plug the FAB girl/guy ratio and maybe will let him take his car (sophomore year) OMG saw the difference in tuition for in-state and OOS kids…no wonder vermontians seem cool about all the kids from out of State! Gotta get him to visit, is there a new student weekend or something?

I go to a high school in VT and last year 54 applied to UVM. This year I was one of 75 who applied. I ended up getting deferred and more than half of my classmates that I’ve talked to said they got deferred as well, so yes imanicollegehelp, I would say there was a large # of applications this year for both IS and OOS students. I’m crossing my fingers for a good reply in March (few days before my birthday!!)

imanicollegehelp, I don’t think you mentioned what state you live in, but I’m sort of curious because I think it’s interesting that both UVM and Penn State are popular choices from your son’s high school. I live in PA and the three most popular college choices from my high school (in shifting order) are Penn State, Pitt and Michigan. As such, I refused to apply to either Penn State or Pitt, though the whole “grade 13” thing wasn’t the only reason (I didn’t want to be anywhere huge or with a prevalent Greek/party scene). Michigan was never really on my radar. However, I chose UVM as one of my state school options (along with SUNY Binghamton) and from what I can tell, applications to UVM from my school are not rampant but certainly not unheard of, and I don’t believe a significant number from my school actually go. I’m just curious as to where a high school would be located that sends a huge number to both Penn State and UVM. Seems so random.

spirit- State is NJ and for such a population-dense state, there aren’t a lot of State school options. Rutgers still gets the most applications, but the kids in general. look to other state schools. Looking over the past stats, which I said, were never THIS high, it looks like a lot of kids apply to UVM but attend elsewhere?

^^we live in NJ as well;

lots of applications (and acceptances) to UVM this year too!!! no idea how many will be attending (and with high OOS COA too?)…

Suburban Boston school, 78 apps to UVM this year, the most ever. 33 accepted, so not sure if there’s a quota from any particular high school. Typically no more than 7 attend, so it shouldn’t be too much “Grade 13”-ish. Probably be worse at UNH (96 apps, 40 admitted so far). Also applied to Northeastern, which had 105 from our school!

It is still a bit Grade 13 as there will be 7 from every school around you.

The upside it that its not hard to get a ride to school.

My daughter attends UNH and even though there are over 12,000 undergrads, she sees people from her high school every day. She does like the school, though.

At my son’s school, UVM is the popular safety with an admit rate of about 70%.
