Free Admissions Advice

Hi,

I'm a recently graduated Duke student with some free time before my job starts at the end of this month. I want to help anyone who's interested in some guidance through the college admissions system. If you're interested, please leave some information about yourself ("chance" thread) and a way of contacting you such as an email. We can also just talk about the school in general.

I’m going to post a formal chance thread (with ECs, awards, and whatnot) for the fun of it probably sometime in September.

Duke is my definite first choice and I will be applying ED to Trinity this year! (neuroscience, woop woop)

I’ll PM you my contact information? I would love to talk to a current Duke student.

Current objective stats:

SAT I: 2290
SAT Subject Tests: Math Level II - 800, Chemistry - 800, US History - 800
GPA: 4.0 unweighted
Rank: 2/422
Course Rigor: Most demanding my school offers + 3 self-studies (5, 5, 5)

Also, I’ll provide proof to anyone that wants it (like a copy of my Duke ID, replying with a duke email) or a newspaper article mentioning my involvement with student government.

Rahul, you have a fair chance. Just express your interest strongly since Duke loves interest.

^Thanks.

How would I express my interest? It is just through the supplement essay/interview?

Because Duke says that they don’t track demonstrated interest through things like campus visits, etc.

Thank you DukeStudent12! I will indubitably be applying ED to Trinity this year, and your help/advice will be very appreciated. I will PM you my contact information.

SAT: 2300
SAT II: Math IIC 800 Chemistry 800
GPA: 4.0 unweighted
AP Bio, Chem, Physics B, Calculus AB all 5s
Will be taking AP psych, econ, spanish, comp sci, stats as a senior.
Thanks again!

Hi guys,

I’m getting a flood of requests right now. Please be patient if I don’t get back to you right away. I promise I’ll get to everyone =)

yes, how would you demonstrate interest? thanks!!!

Hi,

I just saw this today and realize your job is probably about to start, but I’m hoping that you may be able to give my son some advice. He is not on CC, so this is my account.

Just this morning he wondered aloud if he should apply ED to Duke. It is his first choice, but ED seems to close so many other windows, esp financial. He is also very aware of Duke’s clear emphasis on not tracking visits, etc. I’ll give you some of his stats (again, I realize you have lots of requests and your time is limited)

SAT I : 2360
Class rank: top 5% (that’s the best we can estimate with our school - class of 450 kids)
SAT II’s : Bio 780, Math II 800
Finished Calc B/C as Junior with a 5 on AP test. Also 5 on AB, as well as English and Bio.
Sr Year will have AP Art History, AP Enviro, AP Physics BC (plan to take both halves of AP test - electro and mechanics??) AP English, and AP comp sci. Also Latin 4.

Will most likely be National Merit Finalist (223 PSAT in NJ)

Will be captain of Mock Trial team next year (has been on team, very involved last 2 years)
JV tennis and improving - VERY interested in tennis
Summer job this year at tennis camp with pee-wees through 8th graders
Tutors math also
Involved in church and been on several mission trips

Would be applying to Pratt for something along the EE lines, as well as Computer Science.

I will PM our contact info and again, I totally understand your time constraints.
Thanks!

Hi there,

I don’t mean to hijack this thread to help you out but I graduated from Duke in 2011 so maybe I can offer some advice. Your son is very likely to get admitted to Duke Early Decision so its its his first choice school, I would apply ED unless you think that finances will be a problem.

The RD round is extremely competitive and its possible your son will be waitlisted or denied admission depending on the strength of the applicant pool. Your son has excellent grades and scores but the ECs are pretty generic so your son would stand out in the Early round more when legacies and athletes with lower scores will be applying as well.

I would advise your son to heavily emphasize his involvement in Mock Trial as well either in an essay or through recommendations/awards section in the application.

Thanks so much!!!

goldenboy please help me with my question??
how much does DUKE weigh in on AP/s? im taking 1 of 2 maximum in my school.
Im thinking about ED, what is a GOOD way to demonstrate interest?

Duke expects you to take the most rigorous courseload that your school has to offer. If your school offers 10-12 AP courses, then you will be expected to take at least 6-8. However, if your school just offers 2 AP courses, Duke won’t penalize you if you take both of those and don’t have any other alternative AP classes to take.

I would recommend dual enrolling in a local community college though if you can to demonstrate that you like seeking out new opportunities to be intellectually challenged and are proactive enough to find new resources outside of those that are offered to you.

Good luck to all of the applicants to Duke’s Class of 2017!! :D

Would you guys be willing to chance me for Duke? The title of my thread is called “Chance an eager beaver for MIT” but Duke is one of the five schools I asked chances for. Thank you all sincerely!
