Free T-Shirt?

I'm a high schooler on UChicago's mailing list and I've sent a few e-mails with questions to various people at the university. Today, I got a plastic package from UChicago containing a white T-shirt. It has the UChicago coat of arms (or is it called a seal?) and name printed in maroon on the front. I love it, but I'm not sure why I received it--I haven't ordered one and I don't think I've done anything directly involving UChicago lately. Did anybody else get the same type of T-shirt recently? If so, why?

you’re automatically admitted

Maybe it’s just UChicago’s way of upping the ante from generic brochures and letters.

haha seriously? maybe i should join their mailing list!

Oh, Nondorf… how much work you do to boost yield a few points. Gotta appreciate his enthusiasm.

What. We don’t get t-shirts. D:

True. All we got is this stupid world-class liberal arts education.

Thank you all for the (pretty funny) answers. I’m guessing that this shirt thing is a new practice, but has anybody received apparel (besides the scarves for EA admits) from UChicago without requesting it?

WHAT THE CRAP. the admitted students don’t even get tshirts…madness!!!

Wow I am so disappointed by this…:frowning: They better send admitted students a t-shirt to make up for this!!

I think you get a class of '14 shirt once you arrive. I still have my class of '11 shirt. Oddly, I don’t think there was a class of '12 shirt, although there were class of '09, '10, '11, and '13 shirts.

@ ismailcc:
The scarves were actually for ALL accepted students to Chicago this year (including RD and transfer admits, not just EA admits).

I wouldn’t mind if Chicago sent me a t-shirt if they have enough to just give away to prospies.

@phuriku:
What about for transfer students? I’d rather have a '13 shirt than a '14 shirt.

Wow, I am getting really tired of people complaining about not getting free stuff. When you actually get here, you will realize that you can never expect a free thing from the University of Chicago again. There’s no such thing as a free lunch, kids. Your tuition will be paying for some high schooler’s free t-shirt soon enough.

phuriku: I’m confused. You have shirts for all of those graduating classes? How?
fmhcbc: My bad. For whatever reason, I thought that I remembered reading about the scarves exclusively in an EA thread here on CC.

No, no. I personally do not have the shirts for those graduating classes. I know of people who have them. I have, however, never seen a '12 shirt worn on campus, so I assume that they were not made. Unfortunately, I have no idea what they do for transfers.

And yes, KMad is 100% correct. Once you enter those gates, you realize that the free stuff was all a ploy to make you come to Chicago. You will get many ``free" things, but you’ll start to realize that it’s all being paid with your tuition money.

There’s a class of '12 shirt. It’s gray, with the wishbone C on the chest.

During O-Week, transfers will be able to pick a t-shirt that represents their class year. You’ll get them in the Reynolds Club.

^^ If you don’t realize that the free stuff is a ploy to get you to matriculate, I’m not sure you deserve to get in. ;)

Still…as a rising freshman…I’m disappointed about not getting the shirt…I know it’s a cheap trick but it give me this nice warm feeling inside that the University cares…

My favorite thing was the temporary tattoo in the magazine. I wish they would do that again.

phuriku: Thanks for confirming that.

I received a shirt in the mail yesterday, much like the one described by ismailcc. According to the letter that came with it this was because I sent my March SAT scores to the university.
