Fresh/Soph Standing

It shows that I've completed 54 units of coursework in my Bearfacts even though I'm in my first semester. It's largely due to my HS coursework. Does this put me in sophomore standing for telebears appointment right now? Or do telebears only count course taken in berkeley?

You will be in sophomore standing for telebears.
The upside is, you are likely to have an earlier date for telebears appointment.
The downside is, you won’t be able to take freshman seminar classes anymore.

Well, the upside is too good to really care about the downside :)

Holy crap, someone with more HS units than me.

And yes, you will have a relatively early telebears. I got mine something like 4th on my floor - after the two EECS/Business Juniors and uber-achieving BioE Sophomores.

FYI, AP units don’t count. The only thing AP units do is push up your TeleBEARS within your non-AP level (your non-AP level is generally one’s actual level)

Here is a breakdown of the levels

Education level - I am not quite sure what this level is for or how it is calculated. I don’t think it really has much of a purpose

Non-AP level - this is your actual level, it is only based off of UC and CC units. 0-30 is frosh, 30-60 is soph, and so on… The Non-AP level controls the during which set of days your TeleBEARS appointment is.

Future (Telebears) Level - this is based of the sum of all your units (UC, CC, and AP/IB). The future level is used when enforcing course restrictions. For example, when the OSOC lists a class being restricted to juniors and seniors or having seats reserved for frosh, etc…, TeleBEARS looks at this level. This level can boost your TeleBEARS relative to others with the same non-AP level.

The nice thing about Berkeley is that you can accumulate so many units before you come to school. I had junior standing before I started my freshman year, and when I finish my freshman year, I’ll be a senior.

Not that it really does anything (besides earlier registration), I’m still going to graduate in 4 years.

Congratulations on sophomore standing!

Can someone clarify UpMagic’s post? Is it true I can’t sign up for (or won’t get credit for) freshmen seminars if my AP units push me into sophomore standing?

If you already took a seminar class this fall 09 semester, you will certainly get your credit for that. try signing up for any 24-series class (freshman seminar) when you have a sophomore or junior standing and telebears will not let you.

AP units only get you better TeleBEARS relative to your peers.

A frosh with a lot of AP/IB units will have better TeleBEARS than a frosh with few; however, a frosh with a lot of AP/IB units will not have a better appt then a soph with a lot of AP/IB units.

So that means a REAL sophomore will get TB appointment before me no matter what?

unless, your non-AP level says sophomore, a real sophomore should have a appointment before no matter what.

Though there is a caveat, a while back when they were putting in the phase 2 unit restrictions, they did something wrong and broke the system (i.e. last sem my frosh roommate had a better appointment than my soph roommate). I am guessing they have the situation fixed by now.

Does the non-ap level include units you are currently enrolled in? So, would a freshmen who took like, 16 classes first semester, and is enrolled in at least 14 units second semester be a freshmen or a sophmore?

It only looks at units completed.

For example, before Fall 09 I had 82 units and at the end of Fall 09 I had 102 units. The Fall 09 profile on bearfacts always said junior. The Spring 10 profile eventually updated the non-AP level from junior to senior
