Freshman 15: myth?

What do you guys think of the article?

I actually see myself loosing weight based on the enviorment - technically, food is a bit farther away (you have to leave your room/building), while the gym is closer! (You don't have to drive to it)....

It's true, stress may cause weight gain -- college kids eating more and working out less, but, I see it the other way around. Having a lot to do makes me forget about eating most of the time, and it'll only help to take a break to go play tennis or something.

Anyway, the above is what I'll be aiming for.

i think that at first i will miss dinner often. right now, i'll either start doing homework, jump on the computer, or turn on the tv and completely forget about eating. all the way up until my mom calls me for dinner. so, without that, i think i will be a hungry boy for a while. haha. but, yeah. i think lots of people could possibly not eat just to avoid the 15 which is horrible. but at the same time, i know a few people who would be glad to gain 15 pounds...

at least you have to have exercize to get to food and class. =]

I also believe I will lose weight. As was said I will normally eat only at mealtimes, and I will have easy access to a gym. Here at home food is everywhere and the closest gym is a 10 mile drive.

dining hall food gives me the ****s. I lost weight.

I'm really lazy when it comes to food...if someone's not taking me out or if it's not right next to me, then I'll just forget to eat. [shrug]

Stress makes most people eat.

Cortisol from stress responses also make people pack on the weight around the stomach.

I think I'll gain weight but it'll be muscle. Just workout and exercise often and u'll be fine

san diego is a great environment to avoid the frosh 15...we have the beach as our motivation to keep fit

beastmaster: did you get that from that one commercial? haha. "cortisol increases bellyfat, cortrislim reduces cortisol. you need cortislim!!" or whatever its called. hahahahaha

I don't care about eating too much. The only variable that ever affects my weight is just the amount of exercise (it doesn't matter if I eat one snack a day or eat at McDonalds 3 times the same day, I usually weight the same as long as I run a few miles a week).

:{

I fluctuate anywhere from 145-150 (and it isn't waterweight since I always weigh myself after running/weating bucketloads ;_;)

if i were going to ucsb i could rely on the s.ex to keep the weight off

jk jk jk jk

the alcahol would counteract that claire.

heard of a beerbelly much? yeah.

It's usually not a good enough workout :} You'll be too tired to do it to a point of maintaining weight ^_~

i wouldn't drink beer.....
but i guess get your point

ppl dont really develop beer guts until after college tho

have you seen college students?

in high school i used to eat only at mealtimes and didn't care for food much -- but in college things changed and 15 became a real threat -- like if you see yourself sometimes eating when under pressure or when bored (yep! boredom when studying is another thing that'll make you eat) or when you didn't get enough sleep, then you might be in danger of getting it big time

just look at statistics for eating disorders -- most sources report average age is somewhere between 17-23 to get some of the most common ones -- which means plenty of kids start medicating with food while in college

your life in college is much less structured (it is much more hectic) -- in HS you spend a lot of time actually in class and a good chunk of your time is scheduled for you -- while in college you spend much more time outside of class -- you schedule most of your day and a lot of it has to go into forcing yourself to sit and read and do problems -- plus there is no longer family to make dinners for you and no lunch break as in HS occurring at same time every day -- i stopped eating by schedule once i left home and i don't know anyone who eats at specific times

plus people pull much more overnighters -- studying or getting drunk and partying -- lack of sleep increases hunger the next day -- so if you're one of those people who leaves everything until the last day or likes to get crazy, you might have probs

junk food is much more common -- at home i rarely got an opportunity to even see junk food -- at college it is everywhere, from free food at university events, to candy at club meetings, to the very eateries where students have to cash their meal plans -- i personally developed a slight aversion to junk food, but some people love it and it'll tempt them every time they go to a university eatery to eat a meal

I'm thinking I run the risk of losing weight more than gaining weight. I am a vegan. I have ate at two of the cafeterias now (ERC and Revelle), and in both places the only things I could really eat was pasta and salad. And I also forget to eat. I'll get busy doing something and eating just spaces my mind. And, all the gyms where I live are really expensive, so I don't go to one. I am pretty pumped about the SD gym, and will definately be using it.
