if you are living on campus you probably won’t get a permit, simply because they don’t have the room to give everyone permits, only the people that actually need a car gets permit (work, special circumstances and whatnot)

it is not an issue really because most people you will meet won’t have a car, you’ll notice that you won’t need to drive around so much as westwood is close by and a lot of the activity will be on the hill (dorms)

If you’re living at the dorms, you won’t need a car. You’ll have a meal plan and you can get things from the student store which is on your way to class. You most likely will be a driver for all your friends. I don’t remember any first years with a car.
The public transportation isn’t too bad either. It’ll take you santa monica and some other places if you want to hang out outside of campus (and it’s only a quarter).

Once my daughter was admitted to UCLA (she is a sophomore now) we did some research and found that it is nearly impossible for anyone to get a parking permit (freshman or senior). You must be able to document (with pay check stubs) that you have an off campus job, or that your car is necessary for regular doctor appts or something like that. My daughter solved the problem by moving off campus into an apt with a room mate and their building has spots for an extra $60 a month. Otherwise she probably never would have gotten a parking place. She is one block from campus so she walks to classes but uses her car to visit friends at other schools and will use it for an internship this spring.

But you do not need a car freshman year (or any year really). There is so much to keep you busy on campus and in Westwood that for the first year I wouldn’t worry about it. Public transportation is decent for getting to the beach or Santa Monica so you’ll be ok.

I should have added that my daughter lived in the dorms freshman year and moved off campus for her sophomore year. It is very important to live on campus for at least your first year, and the first 2 if possible. You have a much fuller college experience and meet more people that way.

Does anyone know if Regent’s scholars are guaranteed a parking spot all four years. It said we were in the info packet, but I’m curious if there are any restrictions/conditions that apply besides just having to apply for a spot.
