From what I've been hearing, is it true that as a freshman Fordham University picks college courses for you--like the student doesn't really get a say? I've heard that after students enroll and get accepted, Fordham sends them surveys. Based on those questionaires, Fordham puts you into specific classes. Like say for example, ....my interests are Theology & Byzantine History & Medieval History & Christian Art ( stuff around that category ). So I mean, what classes would I be put into? Also I've looked at the Fordham Website @ I've seen that there are a list of core requirements that have to be completed >Core Curriculum | Fordham College at Lincoln Center
___My main questions are : How does it all work out? Is it that as a freshman you have to complete all those required classes & then you get to choose the courses of your choice later in the years? I'm confused. Any help is appreciated :)

When I was a freshmen, we were given a list of requirements that we had to fufill, and we had classes that corresponded to them and we were able to pick. Some classes you get given, and you are unable to choose as I was unable with my english class. However, its only a small amount so you shouldnt be worried. if anything, feel free to email the dean or speak to Father DeCola, he was the most informative and supportive of them all.

There is a long list of core classes that you must take. That turns some people off. But it does give you great general knowledge in subjects you might not have ever thought to study.

Most of the students I have spoken to love Fordham and love the core. They might not be crazy about ALL of the requirements but they do want a well rounded education and are interested in a wide variety of subjects.

As a LC freshman, you will be preregistered for your EP which is based on an interest survey and English Composition based on your SAT Writing score but you will register yourself over the summer for the rest of your classes. For the most part, Fordham students take core classes freshman year and classes for their major later. Certain majors will mean you are preregistered for additional major classes though bc they are required to be taken in a particular sequence.

There are many core classes that you will likely find interesting…Faith & Critical Reason, Art History and Medieval History to name just a few. Keep in mind that while the core is very large and will take some time to complete, there are some choices within the core and some classes that also fulfill more than one requirement.

When my S was an incoming freshman he filled out a survey and the school came up with his first semester schedule based on his interests, classes from HS, and the core requirements. While the schedule he was given was fine, freshmen who had problems with their schedule had time during orientation to meet with their Dean and make any necessary changes. After first semester, students schedule their own classes.
Most students complete the majority of the core in the first two years by mixing in core classes with classes in their area of interest. Overall, my S enjoyed the core.
Good luck.

^^^I was under the impression that RH/Gabelli students are still preregistered for their entire 1st semester schedule. LC students register over the summer online for some of their classes and yes, during Freshman Orientation there is time to meet with your academic advisor or the dean and make changes if necessary. IMO being preregistered for classes is one less thing you have to think about when you are heading off to college!
