Freshman Courseload

I’ve been rummaging through the 08-09 coursebook (assuming that not too much will change), trying to come up with a preliminary schedule…what do you guys think? (I’ll be in Arts and Sciences, so every course fulfills some sort of distribution requirement)

FWS

ASTRO 2201: Our Home in the Universe (I’m not a science person, so I chose this especially for the “No scientific background assumed” description lol)

CHIN 1101: Beginning Mandarin I

Either:
PSYCH 1101: Intro to Psychology (probably don’t want to take the PSYCH 1103 seminar)
-or- AAS 100: Intro to Asian American Studies

PE 1421: Relaxation and Stress Management ;D

This comes out to 16 credits. That’s average for a freshman, right? I’m also an undecided major, although I’m leaning towards English at the moment…I figured that the FWS would make me happy English-wise while I start to get PBS/MQR classes out of the way and experiment with totally new subjects, like Psych or AAS.

Like I said, this is totally preliminary and I know I have a lot of time to decide…just hoping to get some feedback from current students. Also, do freshmen meet with their faculty advisor for the first time during orientation week? I was kind of hoping I’d be able to contact him/her beforehand, over the summer.

Thanks!

intro to mandarin is an incredible amount of work. I don’t know if you looked at the schedule, but it meets 8 times a week (lecture 3 times, discussion everyday). on top of class time, they expect you do do a couple of hours everyday outside of class studying. but your other courses are light, i think, so it probably is doable. (although I’ve heard psych 101 is getting more difficult).

if you haven’t already, you can check out schedulizer.com to work out a schedule.

i heard chin 101 is very easy from everyone i know who took it

Wow…I didn’t realize that the class meets 8 times a week. Are all language courses that intense? Any other feedback about chin 101 would be really appreciated…there seem to be differing opinions here xD

Also, I wasn’t sure where to find the schedule in terms of the days/times that classes meet. I did my research through the 2008-2009 Coursebook (picked it up during Cornell Days) since the Fall 2009 classes don’t seem to be up yet.

Actually…I just registered with schedulizer.com (thanks vivace!) and can see the schedules for each class. Will this change drastically between now and the fall?

no, those times/classes should not change
but there are always a few exceptions of course

and also, only the asian language courses are that many credits (chinese/japanese/korean/etc.)…the romance and other languages are generally 4

thanks, tmk!

According to schedulizer.com, psych conflicts with astro 2201, so i figured i’d drop psych and take it another time if i’m still interested…

Instead, I added math1350 (The Art of Secret Writing)…the prerequisite was three years of high school math, so I figured it might be a good course for someone who isn’t very math-oriented but still needs to get PBS/MQR credits out of the way. Any thoughts? The site didn’t list the professor, though…

why dont you just go with astro 101

It’s definitely something I considered…but I thought it might be too much to take astro 101 and astro 2201 at the same time. I figured I can take astro 101 in the spring.

Wait. I thought about it again, and if I took astro 101 I could also take psych 101 without conflict. So…I think I have finally figured it out. Thank you everyone!
