Not sure who has been giving out this information, but Thurston is most definitely not being torn down anytime soon. I’m currently an undergrad at GW (with friends involved in Campaign GW, which deals with a lot of the campus changes going on) and while it’s true that Lafayette is being remodeled, the same is not true for Thurston.
That being said, a decent amount of freshmen who aren’t too enthusiastic about living on the Vern probably will be assigned there. However, it’s always possible to transfer-if you don’t mind living in a single, for example, you have a decent shot at transferring in Mitchell or even Strong.

i’m a current undergrad and have heard the thurston rumors and they are not true. in fact back in 2007 the university spent about 15 mil repairing thurston over the summer so i doubt they are going to tear it down anytime soon. while capacity at the vern is increasing it is physically impossible to house all the freshman there. from what i hear, if you put the vern on your housing app, even if it is your last choice you get it. i didnt put it on at all and ended up in thurston which was my 1st choice. they give you 8 spots on the housing app, but you don’t have to fill them all up. i only filled up 4 of them, none of which were dorms on the vern.
