My son is a rising freshman. Which freshman dorm should he request? Can anyone provide some suggestions and rationale? Much thanks!

Dorms cannot be requested for first year students. UVA changed this policy a few years ago to keep students from self-segregating. He may request a roommate, though.

Another piece of advice based on the past couple of years. There are pros and cons to requesting a roommate versus just relying on housing to pair you with someone. One unintended result of going pot-luck has been kids ending up in singles when they wanted a double. I have yet to hear of students submitting a mutual roommate request ending up in singles, but there have been a number of reports of students requesting a double, but not requesting a specific roommate, ending up in singles.

At least while construction of the new dorms has been ongoing, there seem to have been more single rooms available than students wanting singles. Just a heads up.

are there more single dorms in the old dorms or the new dorms?

If you say single you will most likely be placed in Gooch-Dillard (we call it being Gooched). There are some singles in old dorms, but they’re very few in number.

Request Old Dorms and don’t request a single!

If you get Gooch Dillars, fight housing…literally go to them everyday and tell them how you will be depressed and can’t live there. Fake roomate problems. Anything to get moved!
