Freshman Dorms

*rolls eyes, RE: post 37

it also depends on costs. apartment style can be a lot more expensive than traditional style...

i live in weinstein right now.. it is pretty social but i think that ultimately depends on your floor and how involved you get. there are people on my floor who are always hanging out and people who never do. i think the social factor comes from the rooms being smaller and the halls being smaller.. don't believe people when they say weinstein is crap. obviously, they've never been to other dorms at other colleges where rooms are literally 10x11 with communal bathrooms. weinstein has cinderblock but you can put posters up. and cinderblock means no rats or cockroaches (at least in the rooms). also, you have upstein and downstein which is great for those cold days. you're also a minute walk away form silver and the cantor film center where alot of CAS classes are. i was really bummed out when i found out i was going to live at weinstein because of all that bad rumors-- but i really can't imagine living anywhere else. you can wake up for class 5 minutes before and make it on time. and it's not as noisy outside as other dorms. you also don't have to walk anywhere to get food if you're lazy/ if it's too cold outside. and i believe that all rooms are doubles. so it's just you and a roomate who shares a bathroom unlike some suites at brittany or hayden.. you have ac/heat as well. you also have java city (a coffee shop) and the learning center (free tutoring/printing) right in the building. and space market, although overpriced, space market which is a 24 hour market and university cafe (pizza) right next to you which is good for all the drunk kids who come home at night.

some cons of weinstein... small rooms, of course, but definitley liveable. cockroaches in the laundry room (but isn't that at every old dorm?).. the stoop of weinstein is apparently THE spot to smoke (there will always be someone there smoking).. that's all i can think of?

PSHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. The smoking crew here in Hayden owns Weinsteins. We have a 12:15 club...look it up on facebook ;) Not to mention a couple of pipe smokers :)

But I know Rubin has a pretty formidable smoking population too :/

So is there anyone who is NOT happy with his or her housing situation? It seems that no matter which hall we choose, we will be happy.

Me. I live in Hayden and I'm pretty disappointed. Did you not read post #37?

Hayden dining hall has vegitarian night. just throwing it out there to whoever is curious.

I understand that you have 2 to a room and 2 rooms to a suite that share a common room and Kitchen. My questionis this... How many bathrooms for the 4 to share? Is there one for the four, or does each room have a bathroom making it one bathroom for two to share?

i think its one bathroom in one apartment, so there is one for 4 to share. also a quick question about third ave: is it possible to ask for/get a single in a three bedroom apartment?

It's very rare for freshman to get a single unless you have a medical condition. I know a girl who got a single in Wallenstein by a stroke of luck. Don't count on it.

You will not get a single as a freshman. There's a good chance you won't even get one as a sophomore.

Correction to matth: You MIGHT get a single as a freshman. If you want to, you WILL get a single as a sophomore.

Sophomores have priority, Alumni hall on 3rd ave is all singles, as a sophomore you will get it. and probably even as a junior as most sophomores try to live on or around union square.

Just remember it costs a lot more. You can live in Brittany for 8,000, but U-Hall and 3rd North are about 14,000.

Elaborating on Yaka, you can also live in Rubin hall for 2,900 a semester.

Thanks but I don't require your help with my replies. This is my third year at NYU so I think I can say with sufficient authority that it is rare enough to get a single as a freshman that it means virtually never, unless, as stated, there is a documented medical condition which is not something that the OP mentioned. As a sophomore, it is possible that one would not get a single, even probable depending on the year. NYU is famous for changing up the housing situation and you can't guarantee ANYone that they will indeed get a single. You have no idea what the situation will be when, or if, this individual is a sophomore.

uhall is just under 12k. brittany is a touch over 8. hayden/goddard are 10.5

<a href="http://www.nyu.edu/housing/payments/rates.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.nyu.edu/housing/payments/rates.html</a></p>

How much does not having A/C suck? I'm sure it gets really hot in the first month...and do you pay for heating and A/C or is that included in your dorm charge?

It's not that bad for the normal school year. It's hot for like 2 weeks and that's pretty much it, since it doesn't get that warm in May around here. All utilities are included in your housing fees.

Thank you Matth. But according to NYU housing policy at this point in time, sophomores have priority. Also at this point in time i know sophomores who have singles at alumni. Furthermore, Im not stating that the nyu housing policy doesnt frequently change, im just saying that at this given point in time it is what it is.

FutureNYUstudent, I do not have A/C. And i cant really tell the difference. I just keep my windows open to get a constant breeze into my room. If its ever hot (very rarely) I just keep both the windows and door open creating a draft which gives me a nice constant breeze as i sit at my desk. My floormates often comment on how cold it is in my room.

Matth, not arguing, but I knew a kid who had a single in one of the 11-or-something people rooms at Weinstein.

When do you guys find out your housing? I am going to be a Junior next year living in UHall as a Peer Ed.

NYU's dorms are small but nice

In the heart of the city...they're awesome I visited this week...

However they are a bit far from the classes
