Freshman English requirement

My S is registering for classes and came back from 1st meeting with advisor with a recommendation to take a preliminary English writing class 1st semester before the required English 125. Does anyone know anything about this class? The advisor said that he sounded a little insecure about his writing abilities and that taking this class 1st would help him both in his writing and his confidence. I know nothing about it and am a little worried that it's unnecessary. Aren't they supposed to teach them to write in the required 125 level class? Also, how will this look when applying to Ross?

GPA will be important when applying to Ross and I believe that English 125 is a requirement so he will need to take that in the winter. If he isn’t confident that he can get an A in 125 now then maybe the counselor is correct. There are multiple essays on the Ross admission form and they are important. Writing is becoming a lost skill and you really do need that in the business world. Good luck.

Writing 100 is in the Sweetland Writing Center. According to the site, this course is best for those who “learn best with one-on-one instructor support, seek more experience drafting and revising academic essays, require a more gradual introduction to writing longer academic essays on a variety of topics, and/or would benefit from an additional term to gain confidence in their writing and reading skills at the college level.” Basically, they’ll be having one-on-one attention from a professor or doctorate student for an entire term. Keep in mind that a vast number of people go to the Sweetland Center for help with their papers, and it is always a highly recommended academic aid. So, if your son was recommended to take this class, by all means, take it! He’ll be in good hands :)

I personally have heard that 100 is kind of a waste. If he does 125, he can still get help from Sweetland Writing Center for every single essay he does; it’s free for all UMich students. Just something to consider; I’m no expert though.

The recommendation is based on a review of the essay that was submitted before orientation and the answers to the questions that were asked when the essay was submitted. Someone must have concluded that 100 class would help keep your son from struggling in 125. It is just a recommendation - your son has to make the decision for himself. If he thinks he needs the help that the 100 class provides, then I would take it.

Actually, the advisors that make the recommendation do not look at the essay at all. They only look at the second part of the self-directed placement, and base their recommendation solely on the answers to the questions. The essay is first reviewed by the student’s first english professor at the University of Michigan; until then, no one will have looked at it.
