Hi I’m an incoming freshman ChemE major who left orientation concerned about the rigor of my schedule. The engineering curriculum has me taking 6 classes my fall quarter for a total of 18 units. Chem 1A, Chem 1AL (the lab supplement), ChE 1A (a 1 unit, 1 class a week chemE class), Math 4A (linear algebra), Psych 1 (GE), and Intro to Chicano Studies (GE). Am I totally screwed? Or should I just expect this being an engineer major lol
Math, Chem and one GE is usually what most Engineering majors take their first quarter. I would suggest dropping Physc. And no, you technically do not have 6 classes; you have 4 (All 3 sections of Chem technically count as one).
If you would check your schedule, generally you would have your classes spread out throughout the week, for example: 2 classes on Monday, 3 classes on Tuesday, 3 classes on Wednesday, 2 classes on Thursday… Etc. Or it could in any other combination.
Two or three lower division courses per day is hardly considered a “heavy workload,” I would say that you have a rather manageable schedule.
By the way, x classes no longer means x classes a day, it means x unique classes a week, so don’t freak out!
I would however, suggest that you drop one of your GEs.
agree. 12 or 13 units is what many people take 1st quarter to get used to the pace. Drop a GE.
