Hi,

I just took a practice GMAT today and scored a 490 without studying. Is there any hope of getting my score up to a 700 by the time Junior year rolls around? I just started college, btw.

Thanks!

Where did you take your practice GMAT?

Online, princeton review.

I am also about to be an undergrad freshman and I took that same gmat practice test. I got a 700- despite running out of time on one of the sections and without any practice ever.

You have A LOT of work to do.

yes,
A 490 isn’t a “horrible” score, it is equivalent to ~1050-1100 on the SAT. I took a “cold exam” years ago and scored a 460. I studied my fanny off and scored a 720 on the real thing. The MOST IMPORTANT aid is the GMAC official guide.

Study this, MASTER the TECHNIQUES to EVERY QUESTION and you will be flirting with a 650-750 score, in theory. Then do the FREE GMAT PREP exams offered on the mba.com website in order to optimize your test taking skills.

The GMAT is a hard exam, harder than the SAT. But, there is reward for someone who studies for it. If I can emphasize 1 point- LEARN the TECHNIQUES behind the official questions, not just the answers. In order to do this, you might have to solve all 900 questions in the official guide 2,3,5 or like me 5 times. After you understand a question, try to think about how the exam can ask the same concept in another format.

After you exhaust the official guide several times, I think Kaplan’s GMAT Advanced and Manhattan GMAT number properties and sentence correction will shore up your skills. Beyond that, “Ace the GMAT” by Royal has some great questions. Again, if you are pressed for time and money, I think you NEED to do the official guide (library = free to borrow) and free GMATPREP computer exams, they are crucial.

Best of luck

Good luck!

When would you recommend someone to take the GMAT? I plan on going to grad school after I graduate and the way it’s going right now I may be graduating in 2013 even though I’m supposed to graduate 2012.

Try taking the GMAT Prep from MBA.com for a diagnostic review. Unlike IQ tests, the GMAT is based on a fundamental understanding of english and math. In essence, you can study for the GMAT. For some, it may take more effort to score in the 700 arena. I’m one of those individuals myself. Pick up some good resources and start studying and you’ll see your scores dramatically improve over time.

you have a lot of time, you’ll definitely be able to get a 700…i went from a 640 diagnostic to a 700 on the real thing in a month, so it’s definitely possible
