which dorms are the best? and dont just say north south or west i mean which residence halls in specific are good?

There are so many options that there can be no best option for everyone. What do you want out of a dorm? Do you want to live with one roommate, or several? Do you care about which dining options are closest? Will you be in honors or scholars? Do you plan to party/ drink? Do you want to live closer to restaurants and everything else on High Street?

There are good options for just about everyone, depending on preference. There are no dorms that are so terrible that everyone tries to avoid them, and no dorms that are so awesome that everyone wants to live there. Most freshmen tend to live in doubles or quads on South campus, where it can be loud and rowdy but fun. Honors dorms are great for a quieter environment, and scholars housing will have you living with people with similar interests and majors. North campus is considered to be a little quieter, with more engineering students.

I lived in Lincoln, the west honors dorm where I had one roommate but nine total suitemates, and I really liked that aspect, and the extra space. My younger brother, a current freshman, lives in Taylor Tower, the north honors dorm, and while he seems happy there, I think the rooms are too dimly lit.

well i want to live with one roommate and i’m not really sure about what the dining options are so if you could tell me that would be great. i wont be in honors or scholars and i probably wont drink but i dont mind partying with those who do. not too sure about whether or not i want to live near high street.

from what i’ve read so far in other places and from what you’ve told me i probably wouldn’t want to live in north, so it’s either west or south. i’m leaning more toward south though i think. so all dorms in south are pretty much the same then?or are there major differences between some of them?

A lot of the freshmen dorms on south are very similar, with a design where there are doubles all along a hall, and shared hall bathrooms. I’m not a huge fan of that, since it seems to me like there is less real living space, but most people like that setup, and like only having one roommate. The issue you can have with only having one room- which functions as your bedroom, your living room, and your study room- is that is your roommate is being loud and you want to sleep/ study, or vice versa, you both can’t really get what you want. One room to do all your living in seems confining to me, although I never lived in one of those dorms. The south dorms are better known for partying and drinking, and my two friends who were RAs in south dorms both had incidents where they had to call 911 because one of their students had passed out and was unresponsive, or had alcohol poisoning.

Your only non-honors option on West is Morrill, which has the exact dorm set up as Lincoln, and I really like that set up. You have one or three roommates, but each bedroom/ study room set is attached to a common room and bathroom that you share with an additional 6-8 other suitemates. I liked this because I wasn’t very fond of my randomly-assigned roommate, but having eight other suitemates made it easy to make friends with the other people I was living with. Most of us remain close friends. We would pack our common room with ten or eleven people and host movie nights. I had half a bedroom, half a separate study room, and then my portion of a large bathroom and common room, which is more space than I think you get in any other underclassmen dorm. There is the chance you get put in a quad with three roommates rather than a double with one, and that means less space, but those people manage fine too.

You should check out the food options close to each dorm, because as much as having access to all 20+ dining places campus offers is great, most people eat 80% of their meals at the ones closest to where they live. The best dining options, I think, are on south, because several of the better and more varied dining places are only a quick walk away. Dining options on west are limited by comparison, and north options are in the middle, but still okay.

As far as high street goes, living on south will put you pretty close to a cheap movie theater ($6.50 student tickets), a bunch of restaurants, a few bars, and two or three clothing stores. The part of high street by north campus has a lot more bars, but still good restaurant options. West dorms are a fifteen minute walk to high street, but if you walk or take a free bus across the river, there’s a shopping complex with a Target, an Old Navy, a few restaurants, a more expensive movie theater, and more stores. Living by High Street is desirable if you like to go out to off-campus parties and eat out, since the walk will be shorter.
