When does the freshman housing application become available? Do they e-mail you or do you have to keep checking the web site?

They will be available mid-March and are coming by snail mail

They will send you an email sometime this month - with a link to the online application.

I want to hurry and fill out my housing info.

how do dorms work at michigan? any in particular that are especially great?

from what i've heard, the best dorms are in south quad on central campus, and the only freshmen that get those are shipman nominees. i'm not sure about any of the stuff on north campus. the rooms seemed pretty small at other central campus dorms.

You will only be able to indicate Central/Hill or North. You cannot pick an individual dorm. Honors students also are assigned to South Quad -- although it's not guaranteed.

Don't be afraid to live on north campus. My son is a freshman and he is in Bursley, North Campus. He has had a great experience there and made some terrific friends with many different majors. The dorm was filled with freshman (his entire floor was freshman) especially since one of the dorms on central was being renovated. Most of the other freshman were in Markley, I think some of the others like south quad, etc. were for residential college, honors, upperclass.
Many move off campus to houses or frats/sorority after their freshman year.

During campus day (yesterday) the housing people said they would be sending emails out on how to apply online at the end of the week.

Honors gets South Quad, and there's a ton more of them than Shipman. And there's other freshmen too.

Aside from having to ride the bus, Bursley and Baits are really not bad. Bursley has a new cafe thing, and Bursley is suites -- so you only share your bath with your suite-mates. The dining on North Campus is consistently rated the best on campus.
