Hi everyone,
I’m currently a freahman in HS, and a non-native student. Im so concerned about my freshman year’s gpa, I have all As and just two Bs. I calculated and my gpa is gonna be 3.5, is it gonna effect my chances for college? Does freahman year’s gpa matter a lot? oh and also I just take one Honors class but planning to take APs and all honors next year!
Know what you can handle. If you got two Bs with one honors class, it’s nothing to be worried about, but you don’t want that to continue. Maybe take a few honors classes instead of all.
Calm down, you’re a freshman.
no, freshman year GPA does not matter a lot. colleges want you to show improvement throughout high school. I’m sure they know it’s a big change in environment for a lot of students, especially if this is your first year in a new country. (however, if you are international, that is a big minus, and more incentive for you to work harder) Don’t worry about the past too much.
Although i think it is essential that underclassmen take rigorous courses in order to prepare themselves for the horror to come in junior year, however, suddenly increasing your workload by this much is rarely a good idea, especially if you’re not doing so hot right now. The goal is to gradually introduce more rigorous courses.
Also, are you sure about taking an AP next year. Do some research on the difficulty level of the AP you’re taking. If you are considering taking a course like world, APUSH, bio, chem, physics, etc, reconsider it. (At least in my school) those courses are more than 100% harder than their honors counterparts.
One of my Bs is for PE!! ( Yes, I can’t do push-ups ) and the another one is for my music class and that is because I joined the class late!
I didn’t take AP Human geo, because honestly I don’t like geography! Instead I’m allocating my time to study vocab, grammar, CR ( SAT matters A LOT to me!) I believe a great SAT score is more valuable than many things.I know that just SAT can’t help me get into a good college but at least it makes my chanses so much higher!!! Also I’m considering to take this classes next year:
Honors English
Honors Chem
Honors Alg 2
AP Euro ( Ap euro is the only Ap class my school offers)
Spanish 1 ( I’m already fluent in a second language, so I didn’t wanted to take spanish in my freshman year)
Swimming Team 2
ECs:
NHS club
CSF
Think carefully about AP Euro. It’s a very brutal class at my school.
I don’t think that Bs in PE and music as a freshman will hurt you. Some colleges disregard freshman year entirely. Don’t take PE and music courses in the future if you can’t get As in them.
Try a BYU Independent Study course for PE- it involves more academic work than a average PE class, and allows you to take more interesting courses if your school gives credit for it.
Also, the best SAT prep at your age is reading lots of books and taking challenging courses. Vocab won’t help much on the new SAT- there aren’t sentence completion questions. Reading literature will teach you more about grammar than learning a bunch of rules. This is from someone who got an 800 on writing and CR without learning sentence diagramming or participles or any of that stuff.
