Moving D into Russell this Saturday. She has reviewed the move-in guide and I think we are pretty organized ... but would love tips from seasoned parents or students. I am hoping for a fun day, relatively snag-free ....

My D moved into Russell last year and it was pretty painless, except the parting. You drive around back on Haines Street (or is it Avenue?) and there are signs everywhere and people to move you around. Your D will go to the lobby and get her keys and sign in, then you go to the room and set up. I hope you have somone strong coming with you, though, because the furniture is just put willy-nilly in the room and it is HEAVY. I would say that was the biggest problem for us last year, just getting that furniture to go where we wanted it. Make sure you have some paper towels and cleaning wipes and something to drink because you will be thirsty. Good luck!!

I would recommend the following:

Short and long ethernet cables (desks may be near or far from wall hookup-return one you don’t need).

Coaxial cable for TV hookup

Duct tape to cover cables/wires in walkway areas

Erasable Board/pens to place on outside of dorm door for messages

Removable wall hangers for pictures etc.

Computer printer with scan/copy features

Small desk lamp/bed lamp

Surge protectors-gives you some extra outlets.

Trash can

Lysol spray for cleaning

Mwallenmd - I read that all dorm rooms have a trash can - is that incorrect? I didn’t bother purchasing one for that reason.

My S is moving into Russell on Thursday - we are very excited. Thanks for all the tips. Mom of 2 Giants - there is a huge thread with lots of tips on the Parent page on CC

Ashley41-you are correct. I remember now that I did buy my D another trash can because the one provided in her room was so very small she ended up with a lot of trash/bottles/ food wrappers etc. on the floor because of this. Taking out the trash is usually not a priority for dorm students. Perhaps the trash cans are larger now. I guess you could just wait and see if the trash can provided suits your needs. Best of luck moving in.

Thanks for the tips, all. Yes, we are bringing my daughter’s extra-burley younger brother to do the heavy lifting :). Of course, we will have to find a place to stash him when things get dull …

There will be errands for him to run, momof2giants! Perhaps books to purchase or snacks to obtain. Did anyone mention that there will be a barbeque behind Russell during move-in? Depending on weather, I guess, it could be moved.

Thanks Mwallenmd for all of your help. I will purchase a trash can for overflow!

So for those of you who are staying overnight while moving your kids in, or are close enough that you will have time for a meal (or want to get something for your child, or for parents weekend), Groupon has 2 great deals right on Main Street. First is Home Grown Cafe, which is a pretty good restaurant. Second in Pinkberry, a yogurt place. Here is the link (and hopefully I will not get in trouble but this is my referral link if you are not a current Groupon member).

My son is moving in early on Thursday (he is a junior) and my wife and I are staying a couple of nights in Newark for our annual pilgrimage to the Green Dragon farmers market in PA and tax-free DE shopping (also Longwood Gardens in PA from a prior Groupon). I had been trying to decide where to eat on Thursday night and Groupon made the decision for me. Home Grown takes reservations on Opentable so I suggest making one because they’ve sold almost 800 of them already so they could be rather busy for the next few days (or weeks).

I love Home Grown Cafe, so does my D. Tell me about Green Dragon (you can pm me).

Moving my D in tomorrow into Dickinson. Does anyone know if they have carts to use or if I should bring my own dolly?

Sure wish there were Groupons when DD '10 was there!
I’d bring my own dolly if you have one. You’re moving in early, the Arrival Survival team won’t be there to help you.
Anyone moving in on the 27th - don’t forget to label your boxes etc with name and room number. Arrival Survival tends to swoop in and cart your things off pretty quickly. Send someone with your stuff while you park the car.
It’s required that move in day be the hottest/most humid of the year. If you’re in a nonairconditioned dorm, make sure you have a fan and extension cord ready to go. Tempers can flare when you’re hot and sweaty.
Best wishes to all for an amazing 4 years. DD has found the working world to be a little less fun than college!

abmnj1: No carts.

A couple of corrections on my earlier Groupon post. First, it’s Yogoberry, not Pinkberry (I assume they are a clone). Second, the Home Grown Groupon is only valid for dinner on Monday-Thursday, and Saturday/Sunday brunch. I only noticed the restrictions when I printed mine (we are going tomorrow night).

My D is on the 4th floor. Does anyone know if Dickinson C has an elevator that we can use to get her stuff upstairs?

How strict are the hours they set for move-in? UD says anyone living in md or de within two hours moves in at 8 everyone else has to wait until 12. I’m a little over two hours away. Can I move in right at eight or will they not be ready for me to move in until 12?

They’re not that strict. Did you do the online check-in? I think the University finds that information more useful than working with the guidelines.

Because of Irene arriving on Sat/Sun I suspect many people will be trying to arrive early. This unfortunately will worsen the gridlock on the roads around UD in the morning even more so than usual on move in day. Also ,if anyone is coming southbound on Rt. 95 it usually is crawling bumper to bumper from the Del Mem. bridge (at least) to the UD exits. It can take almost an hour to travel this relatively short distance on Saturday. Students are also traveling down this road to move into multiple other colleges on this day as well. If I had to do it again I would come down on Friday and check into a local motel for the night. Good luck to everyone.

Moved my D into Rodney on Thursday. Wear very light clothes, it is hot and bring patience!! Loads of carrying and many trips back and forth to car. All in all a great day but then again we were one of very few moving in so we had the place to ourselves.
