Any tips for freshman moving in?

It's organized chaos! Early bird get the pick of beds, if it makes any difference to you.

There are a million things you can buy on the quad, but it's a lot cheaper and you avoid the ridiculous lines at Target.

should the younger brothers come along? or will they be bored out of their minds?

We are bringing our youngest, who is 4 years old. My H and I will probably alternate attending the parent stuff, while the other watches the 4 year old. (Talk about orgnaized chaos!)

We are flying out from California and luggage space will be at a premium. D spent 3 hours in Bed Bath and Beyond the other day doing the college registering thing - she picks out everything she wants and they make sure she can pick it up at the local BB and B store in Winston-Salem. Sounds like we just show up on Aug 21st at the store and they will have everything ready - don't even purchase until you pick up. Everyone probably knows about this - but I was really impressed.

Moving in isn't that much of a problem. Wake has some of the upperclassmen along with all the RAs come back early to help move people in. When I got to campus my freshman year, I had to get in line to sign in and get the key to my room. Since I'd already been given my room assignment, I knew where I was living, and my family and the upperclassmen started hauling my stuff up to the room. By the time I got my key, all my stuff was out of the car and in the hallway outside my room. And then the unpacking began. It's a busy day, but it's fairly streamlined (and the good news is that move in the next three years was a breeze).

get there early. remember to eat lunch. dads often stand there overwhelmed not knowing what to do until someone gives them an assembly job (a shelving unit, drawers, hooking up the tv/computer cords... etc) then they are content for awhile and it is helpful.

don't feel in a rush to get your computer. it is a long walk back from IS while carrying a computer and printer, so if it is convenient, try to set it up so you can drive back. read the instructions that they give you, and DO NOT install the printer software from the cd they give you. it is already installed and if you try to install it again with the cd it will mess up your computer. lots of people do this.

I brought too many clothes to college.
Don't do that.

I rushed to be the first one to get my computer.
Don't do that.

Also, they give you a sheet of paper telling you HOW to turn on your computer and HOW to install your printer.
FOLLOW these instructions if you dont want your computer to be messed up.

On move in day, many parents buy this ridiculous amount of food for their kids including pop corn and cup noodles and stuff. A lot of this food stay in their rooms all year round and is thrown out at the end of the year.
BUY only what you need. Too much food in a room already this tiny is just a pain.

We tried the Bed Bath and Beyond order-in-hometown, pick up in Winston-Salem and it was not successful (last year). We thought we were doing everything right. We sat in an office while the BBB employee in our store near home did the computer work and then called the Winston-Salem in BBB to confirm. We got the names of the employees in both stores. We went to the Winston Salem store and there was no order pulled for us. The employee who had been contacted was on her day off. The other employees were not very familiar with this program, even though their store is near a college. Although this was a wrinkle, we did okay. Not everything was in stock but after seeing the room there were other things we wanted as well, so we bought those. The only one of one item left was slightly damaged and they gave us a big discount. We were able to pick up other out-of-stock things at other stores as well. If I do this again, we will call the pick-up BBB close to when we leave home to make sure the order was done properly.

I have been checking the BBB website, but unless I am missing something there is no college registry. They have information about their Pack and Hold College Shipping which just allows you to purchase what you want/need and they will ship to the college when you provide them with an address and move-in date. Is the registry only available through particular stores?

We did the college registry at our local store, then received a print-out of the items that we selected. Supposedly the items will be all packed up for us to pick up at the Winston-Salem BBB. We do not purchase the items until we pick them up. There really wasn't anything in the store that advertized this service. I had read about it here, so went and asked a manager, who got us set up.

Thanks! Will check it out.

OH yea, get insurance on your thinkpad. I think move in day is the last day you can do that.

people regret not getting it later.

Good advice. Thanks all. Next thread... REGISTRATION!
