I've been accepted to GT and need some guidance.
I'll be depositing my prepayment this weekend, and have no idea how this thing works.
How do I choose which dorm to live in and purchase meal plans? What is Freshman experience and how do you apply?
And... do you need a car at GT? I thought they have a campus bus, but I read somewhere that it's like 45 min from west hall to freshman class.

Anything you can tell me would be great. I'm kinda lost... (I can call the office, but they're closed for now. and I wanted to hear from YOU!)

-ok, so DORMS: you have freshman dorms on east campus and west campus. East is next to Greek life and the football stadium, usually more loud and lively West is next to the music building and the gym, better food by a little bit, but REALLY quiet.

-meal plans you sign up for unlimited, 14/week, or 10/week (if you go greek you can change to 75/semester)

-freshman experience is basically just a “try to get everyone used to college”, lot of tutoring and meet-and-greet activities. I would recommend it just for meeting people:)

-first semester freshmen can’t have cars, but it takes 20 minutes top to walk to my music classes that are completely across campus. and the buses go around the perimeter of campus.

Just ask if you have any other questions, and I’m SO excited that you chose GT! TO HELL WITH GEORGIA!!

I valued and still value a quiet environment, and so I chose West Campus as a freshman and have lived in various residence halls on West Campus since then.

All freshmen who live in Freshman Experience (FE) dorms must purchase meal plans. To my knowledge, the only non-FE “traditional residence hall” (ie. a dorm) is Fulmer, which is all-female. All the other “traditional residence halls” will be for Freshmen only and thus will be FE. To participate in FE, just pick a FE dorm.

For freshmen living in FE dorms, all regular meal plans cost the same amount. To adjust this equal cost to what it would cost if you were not living in a FE dorm, the amount of Buzz funds you get differs, with 10/week getting the most and unlimited getting the least.

Having a car certainly helps, especially if you cook by yourself in your later years at Tech. Otherwise, aside from the occasional desire to leave campus, you don’t need a car. The bus service (ie. the Stingers) aren’t always that reliable, but realistically, you should never wait longer than ten minutes for a bus during the day. Unless you walk very slowly, it should never take you three-fourths of an hour to walk from any West Campus dorm to Skiles, which is where you’ll have your math recitations. Fifteen minutes is the absolute longest I estimate anyone healthy should take walking from West Campus to Skiles.

Most classes are in the “middle” of campus, but you will likely have some Math/English classes in Skiles (closer to East Campus) and some computing classes in Klaus/CoC (closer to West Campus)… I have never had a problem getting from class to class in less than ~10 minutes.
