I'm trying to put together a freshman orientation or tour program for incoming freshman (it would be held during registration day, at the end of the summer). My school's never done anything like this, and I think it'd be pretty beneficial. I think I know what I want to do with it, but I'm curious what other schools do. If you go to a school that has an orientation, how is it done?

At my orientation, we had some faculty and administration speak about the program and some student leaders describing the community. Plus there was complimentary food+drink.

At my school there are upperclassmen who are 'mentors' for the incoming freshman. They usually get a couple of frosh each year and we have mentor perios about every month and a half. Also, the first actual day of school day is only for freshman and the mentors.

I like our school's system. We have registration day on Monday where everyone comes and gets schedules and books and such. Every student comes to that for about half an hour, it runs all day, and then we have students volunteering to give tours to freshmen and new students, and they're optional. Then Wednesday (nothing on Tuesday) is freshmen-senior day. The seniors greet the freshmen getting dropped off and at the buses, and hand out beads in our school colors. Then the freshmen go to the theater for a little 'welcome to high school' from the principal, and all the freshmen teachers are introduced. While that's happening the seniors all eat breakfast together in the cafeteria and just hang out. Then the seniors join the freshmen in the theater and put on a skit about the school that some of them who chose to created over the summer. Then, at our school we have advisories, which is a class everyone takes every year. It's a group of about ten kids from your grade and you really just hang out with them for half an hour every day. The seniors and freshmen each split up into their advisories and then pair up with one from the other grade and hang out, play games, talk, really do anything until lunchtime. It's sort of a chance to get to know some upperclassmen for the freshmen, and the advisory pairings usually end up hanging out throughout the year together. Then it's lunch time, and then everyone goes home (it's a half day). Some of it sounds lame, but I LOVED it when I was a freshmen, and I can't wait til next year to do it again as a senior.

at my school, we have a day in june where the HS kids get out early and the 8th graders come visit school, and juniors & seniors show them around-- they get divided into class-sized groups, and we do a tour as well as a Q&A type thing. there's also an assembly where the principal, student gov people, teachers from various departments, etc speak.

Our first day of school is only freshman and about a quarter of the seniors. They have a representative from every club come and talk about the club and encourage the freshman to join them. The seniors also station themselves in the hallway in case anyone gets lost.
