Freshman Orientation

Does anyone know the date or dates for freshman orientation for students entering this fall? I don’t see it anywhere on their website or in the admittance package.

Just got back from the CAS open house and the dates were given in our packet there.
Session 1: June 6-8
Session 2: June 13-15
Session 3: June 20-22
Session 4: June 27-29
Session 5: July 11-13
Session 6: July 18-20
Session 7: July 25-27
Session 8: August 29-31

consider going earlier in the summer- you register for classes at orientation. if you plan to get a local bank account, be sure to bring your social security number.

incoming freshman, be sure you consider signing up for FYSOP, a service program that happens the week before school. Applications opened last year in June, and closed pretty quickly. Fun way to make great friends before class even starts. About 1000 new freshman do it every year in 10 areas of interest.

@shoot4moon - Thanks for the info! My D just sent in the deposit (or should I say mom and dad) last night! She’s very excited! She will be in CGS, which I believe your D was too. We talked a little last night about FYSOP and D said they had mentioned it during the Q and A session they had the other day at open campus. She thought that you would miss the orientation at the beginning of the year if you did that. But isn’t that what she is going to early in the summer? Is the SPLASH that she would miss? What would be the better one to attend if she could only do one?

She isn’t going to miss anything if she goes to an earlier orientation and then does FYSOP. FYSOP only conflicts with the very last orientation. SPLASH occurs after FYSOP ends–it’s right after freshman matriculation. Therefore, I would suggest (if she can) to do an earlier orientation and then sign up for FYSOP. I loved it as a freshman and was able to get acclimated to Boston for a week before all the classes started up. Plus, a bunch of kids moved on my floor, too, including my roommates, so we were able to get to know each other.

Ok thats great! She really wants to do FYSOP, but you have to apply right? Do they turn away many kids or any at all? Anyway it sounds awesome and she would love to move in a little earlier to get used to everything.

Yes, they turn away kids, but it is generally for the time they apply vs. quality of applicaition. I was nervous about this, as I wanted to make our hotel reservations and flight. The challenge is to watch carefully for when apps open and do it - LOTS of people were shut out last year because it was full. I believe it opened in midJune, and the wait list began (all spots were closed) by early to mid July. Last year, there was no way to notify the university that you wanted to be notified when applications opened - we just had to keep checking. Agree with ShiningStar - it is a wonderful way to start your time in Boston. In a nutshell, last year she was allowed to movein at noon on Monday, and we were told that whatever was not moved in by four would not be done until the following Saturday as they would be so busy. It was interesting - because all the students were on a tight time schedule, people kept their room door closed, there was minimum socializing, and the parents were allowed to help. Everyone seemed to want the same thing - to be DONE by 4. At 4, DD2 and I took the T back to the hotel, and DD1 left for FYSOP. Normally, you wouldn’t see your student at all after they started FYSOP - I actually had to go back on the T at 7AM for a forgotten key, and spent a lovely hour leisurely walking back through campus and stopping at a few places to say a prayer for our DD and savoring her new home. The rest of the day, DD2 and I hung out and left that night. It was a great schedule - worked well for a freshman. Next year, she is on her own, but will use the same airport shuttle service to get her stuff from storage to the dorm. Her core friends are all from that group. Last year, you could choose from 10 areas of interest (environment, disabilities, children, etc). Every day they would do something different to serve Boston with their “team” of perhaps 20 students and student leaders. In the evening, they had lots of fun. I believe they finished last year on Friday night, and the rest of the students moved in on Saturday?? How quickly we forget! The only downside for us as Californians is that we had already been home for a week when they did the matriculation ceremony, so we missed that.

Wow, that sounds wonderful! I hope my D can participate. So where online do you check to see when the application is up? And what is involved with it, an essay, basic information? I agree, a great way to make new friends with similar interests.

FYSOP is one of my top five favorite aspects of my experience at Boston University. I participated as a freshman and then have staffed the past two years. I can’t get enough. I hope to staff again one last time this year too!

This year, there will be 11 issue areas with one new soon-to-be-revealed issue area being added to the mix. There’s probably going to be somewhat over 1000 freshmen, about 260 staff members, 22 student coordinators, 2 graduating senior program managers, a graduate intern, and 2 full-time CSC staff members involved in FYSOP 23. Each group consists of about 13 freshmen and generally 3 staff members. My group last year became incredibly close. Some of my freshmen met their best friends through FYSOP. I’m happy to say that we’ve remained pretty close all throughout this year too. A lot of my freshmen continue to ask me questions post-FYSOP too. I think that staff definitely is a great resource for incoming freshman to have. In general though, FYSOP is a really unique opportunity to come to BU early, explore the area through community service, gain the social benefits, and learn a tremendous amount. It’s also really fun. I would (and do) encourage any freshman to participate if they’re interested!

The application will be posted online at: [First-Year Student Outreach Project (FYSOP) Community Service Center Boston University](First-Year Student Outreach Project (FYSOP) | Community Service Center)

You’ll hear it repped at orientation a lot too!
