Freshman Parking Questions

<p>I'm looking for tips on whether to spend the $ to register for parking on campus. My son is a new Freshman and will be driving to/from UMD from CT. We are thinking of having him park the car at a relative's house in Northern VA and use the Metro to pick it up and drop it off when he needs it. Is it worth it to register for parking on campus as well? If we don't register for parking on campus, can he occasionally park on campus overnight anyway? </p>

<p>If it’s cool with the relative, then I would recommend parking it there. As a freshman, he’ll most likely get a spot in the Comcast Center lot, and will have to move his car before every home basketball game. I think there’s free(?) parking in some lots on weekends. Note: do not park in a no parking zone or a place where a permit is required. UMD’s DOT is merciless, predatory, and crazy expensive when it comes to issuing parking tickets!!!</p>
