I just stumbled across this publication listed on the Housing/Residence Life website. It is something freshman can order - they submit their photo and basic info. It's basically a freshman directory. I am surprised that I did not see this mentioned anywhere on the new student website. Has anyone submitted their info for this and purchased a copy?

Yeah… I wanna know too…

Also, how can I choose my room or roomate?

Is it duringthe orientation? How about the classes?

Hi, Rockville Mom,
I checked the similar threads at the bottom re: Freshman Records and they seem to be saying that these things are money-makers and that the kids don’t get them quickly enough to be of any value!

When D started at Wake 3 years ago, it seemed as if most of the incoming freshman class had submitted photos. D received her copy in a huge packet of stuff when she checked in on the first day of orientation. Not sure how much she used it (she’s not home so I can’t ask) AND, not sure how much more Facebook is used now vs then.

Re: rooms – again, based on 3 years ago, there was a mailing that included a housing form, asking the typical questions about your living/study habits. I believe the only dorm you could self-select was the substance free one – otherwise you just wait to see where you end up.

No one really pays any attention to the Freshman Record. I don’t even remember picking one up. Everyone uses Facebook instead.

You can’t pick your room or your roommate. Rooms are randomly assigned and roommates are assigned based on your survey.

You meet with your student and faculty advisor during Orientation to pick classes.

i got information about it in the mail today, should i still submit a photo even though i never plan to buy or look at the book?

Yes - we received this large packet in the mail yesterday as well. Seemed like mostly marketing oportunities - buy bedding, buy a rug, buy a copy of the Freshman Record, etc. Have not had a chance to really look through it yet.

We received a packet yesterday also with all the info on that Freshman Record, Bedding, etc. If any current Wake students see this post - could you advise me which, if any, would be worth purchasing for our D. The offers were for: Freshman Record, Residence Hall Linens, Welcome Care Packages, and Student Back Up Software. Thanks!

And a carpet -do you need the carpet? I recall going to a remnant place back in the day and bringing back a random piece of carpet. Do many/most freshman get the carpet? Too many decisions.

I would advise getting a carpet. I’ve had one all three years so far and its definitely been worthwhile. The floors can be cold and kind of disgusting. I’ve never bought a carpet at Wake or through Wake, always on my own.

The freshman record is kind of pointless, I wouldn’t bother. Care packages can be nice if you’re into that kind of thing. I’ve never gotten one and I don’t feel like I’ve missed out or anything. Back Up software is important although I don’t think it matters if you get it through Wake or not. I use an external hard drive to save my work so it doesn’t get lost. Buy your own sheets. I wouldn’t use the Residence Hall Linens. Pretty much everyone buys their own bedding.

One more question!
All materials, why do they ship that to my home, not to school???
They ask me my address, and i dunno why.

I went on CC last year when my D was starting Wake and asked the same question and was advised that it is a waste of $, and that less than 1/2 even submit their picture.

So Cal - We are also from socal, and I seem to remember that they do ship to your home - at least that was the case last year- which is why we waited and purchased most of my Ds stuff when we got to WF. There is a Bed, Bath and Beyond, within a mile or two, and we pre-selected her stuff at the one here, and they had it ready and in a box when we got to the Winston-Salem store. Also, on move in day they had set up a store on the lawn where you could purchase storage type things for your dorm (bed risers, closet organizers, etc) and Wake stuff too.

LOL! I edited the Freshman Record at Wake in 1975 and was certain that it had gone the way of the dinosaur with the advent of Facebook. Back in the day it was required reading (it was actually called the “Face Book” for short), but I can’t imagine that it’s very viable anymore.
