DD keeps getting a questionnaire to fill out (and then of course purchase) the Denison "New Student Record", a book with pictures and info on all the new students. I've basically assumed it was like one of those "Who's who" types of books and ignored it, but I notice that DD has filled out the form and has indicated that she will buy a book. I guess I would figure at a small school like Denison you're going to MEET the students, you don't need to buy a book to see their picture! Anyone have any idea how many students even participate in this and if it really is a "must have" like they claim?

I would actually recommend this book as dumb as it sounds! The kids use it to remember each other's names and figure out who everybody is. They are actually almost all in it!

Even in a small school they're still looking at about 500 new faces and wondering who is that cute redhead or that smart kid in my math class or whatever... ;)

Thanks Weenie! We will add it to the list of "must haves" and send in the
profile :-) I suppose we really need to start thinking about getting dorm room stuff together.....do the beds need the Twin XL size sheets?

Yes, all the beds are extra long. Somewhere on the Denison web site (under housing) is a list of what every room has. What building is she in?

We don't know for sure yet, but the swim coach told them all to request the Quad that sits on the hill right behind the pool (I think its East Quad?). She took us over there and we walked around during June-O....she said that was where she stayed when she visited and where most of the swimmers seem to live. So hopefully she will get assigned there. Are we allowed to laugh or at least wonder who came up with naming the all-women's dorm,
"Beaver Hall?!" <g>. DH said at least its not the male dorm....</g>

Ha! I didn't know that was the name of the women's dorm on East Quad!

Yes, the East Quad is closer to the pool - probably more convenient for early swim practices. I think there is only one building there for freshmen, the rest are upper class.

Did Denison have the kids choose buildings this year (their first, second, third choices)? I didn't see that on their online form.

If she gets assigned to Shorney (which is the big freshman dorm on the West Quad) do not despair! The kids love it there. They meet a ton of friends and it is a realy friendly, open-door dorm. My son lived across from it in Smith but spent all his time in Shorney. (Smith is a really nice, newly refurbished dorm but sort of closed-door.)

Weenie,
Yeah, lots of practices, early and late....I think they're at the pool about 4 hours a day (early morning then late afternoon). DD was happy to get almost all of her classes scheduled in the mornings. She typically has an "energy burst" after practice, so actually wanted the earliest classes possible so then she can come home and take a nap before afternoon practice.
I don't think they got to request specific buildings. She filled out the form and sent it in before I really saw it, but I know it asked for some types of preferences and somewhere she asked for East Quad. The swim coach also paired each of them up with a roommate he thought they would get along well with and they requested each other. So far it does seem like they have alot in common!

Sounds good! I thought it looked like they had changed that part of the housing process. My son got to list his choices for buildings. It is sort of dumb though, because most kids don't know what the different buildings are anyway.
