Freshman registration

I’m sure this is an embarassing question but…I saw that the classes for Fall 2007 are up on the registrar’s site. Can someone tell me if these are the only classes being offered? I’d assume not, because they also have the numbers listed and there are very little spaces left. For example, only a handful in 3rd semester French and intro to literary method, both of which I assume would be host to a good number of freshman.

Also, any information in general for freshman registration? Which classes to sign up for first? Only one of the classes I’m going to tentatively be signing up for has no cap on it!

First, take a deep breath. :P I was totally petrified signing up for classes last summer, but it will all be OK.

What you should do is make up a timetable of courses you want to take (which will be hard until you get your USEM, but you can start now). Put in a few alternate course choices as well.

When you sign up, foreign languages should be your first priority if you want to take it. They open up a few more spaces for incoming freshman, but those are hard to get into no matter what grade you're in so sign up for those ASAP. Foreign language classes are some of the few where the cap cannot be ignored. In many other classes, you can email the professor and generally if you show enough interest, they'll let you in- but not always.

If you don't mind me asking, which courses are you thinking about? I'm happy to help you out with which classes to sign up for first, alternate classes, and good professors. :)

I wanted to finish my French first semester, either get it over with or prepared for continuing study (I DO love the language anyway). I also wanted to take the introductory film course. It gets rid of my CA requirement and I'm also a huge film geek. :p

With that and in addition to my USEM, I was thinking either intro to literary method or the ECS Modernism pro-seminar. Lit has a cap though. If neither of those work, then intro to philosophy or Islamic civ.

If intro to philosophy is with Professor Teuber, I would suggest it. I took a class with him this past semester and adored him so much that I'm probably taking intro to philosophy at Harvard this summer with him.

Definitely sign up for French first. When you find out what your time slot is, try to log on ASAP and sign up for it. I looked on the enrollment stats and there's still a bunch left. Have you done the search engine? That will tell you all the times. Maybe make a schedule around all of the times that French 30 is offered.

I know that it's not a CA, but if you like film and you want to be an English major/minor (or just if you like film :P), I would suggest ENG147a Film Noir with Professor Flesch. I've heard nothing but great things about him. It's a humanities requirement if that helps at all.

Maybe try to take a PE as well. They fill up fast so it's best to get them done with ASAP. I really suggest first year experience. I really liked it and that only PE aspect of it was hiking down to Gossman.

When should we sign up? ASAP or do we wait for our matriculation packets to come in the mail?
How do I know which ones to take without the advice of a guidance counselor???

You're an adult now, you can handle it. Some people get lucky and get amazing advisors- I didn't. Mine is intelligent and extremely nice, but hard to get a hold of so I did my entire freshman year on my own. Most people I know do. Freshman year is about exploring so it's easy to do on your own.

In your matriculation packets, it will give you dates of when to register. It will be through Sage and July- early August.

RELAX!!! you won't be able to register until you get the info that tells you when you are allowed to log on to do so.

you will be sent plenty of information about registration when the time comes. if things are done the same way as they were several years ago, you will also be given the chance to talk with/e-mail a student fellow whose job it is to help you with registration questions -- they will contact you with their contact info (if things are done the same way as then). For now, you can browse around to get an idea of what is being offered and what you might be interested in -- but RELAX!!! you have plenty of time, and they will provide plenty of information! just watch your mail and e-mail for information.

all the info for students registering for fall 2007 isn't even posted yet -- the registrar's new student info site says more info will be posted in june -- http://www.brandeis.edu/registrar/newstudent.html

I take it we will also receive information about filling out the academic advisor form in that packet?
Thanks.

You are basically just assigned to an academic advisor based on your intended major, I think. There might be a form, but I don't remember getting it or filling it out but my advisor is so creepily atuned to my mix of majors that it's scary (Latin American political social movements and their relation to the economy).

I would suggest to go to the registrar's page and then go to the search engine. Make sure it's "Fall 2007" and search various departments that you might be interested in. They have a list of classes plus descriptions and prereq requirements. You can also search for gen ed requirements such as nonwestern and creative arts.

There's some sort of academic advising form on sage...that's the one I was referring to. I haven't really looked at it, though.
