Schedule Advice

Hey guys, I'm a freshman interested in eventually applying to the Haas Program and I just wanted some advice on this possible schedule. I can't attend CalSo so I need some help.

Econ 001
UGBA 010
History R001B
Chinese 001A

Should I replace Econ/Chinese with a Calc course? I'm really interested in learning Chinese and Calc is one of my weaker subjects. Thanks!

Hey keires,

I’m going to be attending Berkeley and just went to CalSO this last week. I’m also interested in joining haas, so I asked a lot about the pre-reqs and what not.

I’d say your schedule looks fine, but definitely switch out Econ 1 for a calc course, preferably Math 16A (it’s the easier of the two series and haas does not care which one you take). Econ 1 is a course recommended not to be taken by entering freshmen due to the competitiveness of it. Save it until next semester or next year where you will be ready to join the competitive crop! Math 16A is a pre-req anyways so you don’t look too bad! UGBA 10 was said to be fine if you dedicate some time to it (material is simple, but curve kills!) if the unit count is between 13-16 units, I’d say that’d be a perfect first semester! Enjoy :)

As a pre-haas major, what classes should a 1st semester freshmen take?

There are 7 pre-reqs.
2 semesters of calculus (take it easy and take the 16 series)
R&C requirement finished
UGBA 10
Econ 1
Stats 20 or 21

That’s 7 courses that have to be done over 4 semesters! So take it easy  take a calc course, and then an R&C or UGBA course and you should be perfectly on track! Take some discovery courses for enjoyment to fill up that schedule :)

I would also agree to maybe take Econ 1 next semester (in the spring), because 1. I think Math 16A is a requirement anyway 2. Competitive, and it would suck to get that kind of intro to Berkeley in your first semester, lol, unless you feel up to it. 3. I heard it might be easier in the spring? Or maybe even work on some easier Reading and Composition requirement if you still need it, or the American Cultures requirement.

Btw, I’m pretty sure I’ll be taking Chinese fall semester, too! yay for languages, lol

Hmm, turns out both Calc series are full now. What is everyone’s opinion about taking Stats 21 instead? Or should I just go ahead and fulfill a breadth requirement?

I am assuming you have already completed R1A requirement since you’re already going to take R1B, so by having UGBA 10 on your schedule you will have completed 3/7 pre-Haas requirements by the end of your first semester. So you’re going to be well on track, take a breadth class or AC class for fun :)
