Freshman Schedule????

Hey everyone,
I'm an incoming freshman in LSA and the Honors Program. I'm undecided but I have strong interests in both Biology (pre-med) and Political Science (pre-law). Even when I ultimately decide between the two, I'd still like to have a major/minor, or MAYBE a double major. I was wondering if you could weigh in on my academic plan for first year.

I got a 5 on the AP Bio exam so I should be placed out of Bio 172/173. My Senior Year APs that I'm expecting to get credit for are AP Gov, AP Lit, and AP Calc AB. Therefore, I'm assuming that because Poly Sci majors are recommended to take two intro courses, I should get AP credit and then just have to take one Political Science course freshman year right?

Fall Semester:
Honors Classic Civ 101
Chem 130
Math 185 (Honors Calc 1)
Psych 120: Law and Psychology (First Year Seminar)
UC 151: Biology of Human Disease (First Year Seminar)

17 credits total, I've already backpacked first semester and the times all work out

Winter Semester:
Honors Poly Sci 140
Honors Classic Civ 102
Math 186 (Honors Calc II)
A 200 Level Biology Course
Sociology 105- (First Year Seminar, I think it's really interesting and it covers the Race and Ethnicity Requirement)

Spring Semester:
Study Abroad in Grenoble, France (8 credits, fulfills language requirement)

I'm slightly worried that my first semester is too easy. The reason I wanted to take 2 first year seminars is that both are in fields related to either law or medicine and I feel that would be helpful to me making my decision about ultimately pursuing either pre-law or pre-med. Also, Calc I will be mostly a review and classic civ shouldn't be too bad. With this first year schedule, by sophomore year I should be done with humanities and math (don't pre-meds only need up to Calc II?) as well as my foreign language and race and ethnicity, so then I could really focus on either bio or political science, or both sophomore year and up. I also had a question regarding Chem 125/126, is it mandatory to take at the same time as Chem 130???

Yes, pre-med students only need to complete calc II; it is also a requirement for the biology major. Math 185 is a theoretical course and it is probably much harder than the course you took in high school. Students are advised to take this course only if they want to pursue a mathematics major. If you get credit for AP Calc AB, you should probably take Math 156 (Applied Honors Calculus II) if going for pre-med. For chemistry, it is strongly advised for students going the pre-med route to take Chem 125/126 concurrently with Chem 130. Your advisor will push you to do this.

Have you taken the chemistry placement test? If you do well, you can place out of Chem 125/126/130, which will give you a lot more options these next few semesters.

Also, just as a forwarning, medicine is a serious commitment. If you go for it, you should give it your all because you’ll be competing against some of the smartest and most driven people for at least 8 years.
