freshman schedules

We just got back on weds from freshman orientation. The two days (testing and orientation) were full days but ran like clockwork (they must have a "dean" of orientation!) Anyway everything went great except S schedule, he came home with three options, 14,16 or 17 credits. He can't fit in the foreign language or chemistry (which is recommended for 1st semester biology majors) because spanish is full and chemistry only has late afternoon time slots and S is taking Marching band (1 credit) which meets T, W, Th from 4:45 to 7. So he registered with 14 credits (University 101, Calculus, English, Biology and Lab, Marching band) He came home thinking that wasn't enough and added a pysch 101 class, taking credit load up to 16. Now he doesn't know what to do, I know the marching band will take up SOOOO much time in the fall, maybe he should just drop back to the 14 credits, take chemistry next semester and fit spanish in later. He already has met both history credits (6) with AP credit. Any thoughts? I recommended that he get in touch with pre-med advising. He really didn't get much individual counseling at orientation.

its a great idea for him to get in touch with a pre med advisor.
The trouble with labs is they seem to always meet in the late afternoon or evening,I guess thats to leave room in kids schedules for other classes. Then that conflicts with marching band times.D who was a performance major in her undergrad days at a differenet large state flagship public U had lots of friends with this problem who tried to combine science majors with marching band requirements.Would your S forgo the marching band for freshman year or is that a must keep on his schedule? Seems to me he'll always have the problem since marching band practice time will always be the same, and lab times will always be the same. Its a tough one.
S had to forgo taking the last class offered by a fabulus honors college prof this coming fall b/c of the lab time.

Sixteen credits doesn't seem too overwhelming. I would recommend he go ahead and keep the schedule for now , attend the classes the first week to meet the profs and see what the class requirements will be before deciding. If he wants to drop a class then he can. University 101 is a fun class - not too demanding- so that will be a nice break from his tougher courses. It looks like a nice well rounded schedule of classes!
My d could not get a language class in the fall either, but she was able to complete her requirement in the spring. Good luck!

My daughter is entering her sophomore year. In both of her freshman semesters, some of her "first choice" classes were full before she was able to register. But she was diligent about logging in and checking the availability once the drop/add period came around. In both situations, openings came available in the filled classes and she was able to get in. Your son might want to keep an eye on the spanish class when drop/add arrives. There might be an opening.
