Scheduling challenges-any suggestions?

My D did not have any AP credits, but she tested out of her school’s first level of Math and English for her major. Instead of taking free electives, she plans to double major + minor, and she has “moved ahead” in the curriculum for her majors. This all sounds like a good thing, until it comes to scheduling for each semester. Because she doesn’t have the credit hours to register earlier, she is always registering AFTER the students who are competing for seats in the same classes she needs. For example, she registers on Tuesday for fall semester (5-6 classes) and of the 13 classes she has been approved to take, only two still have any seats left as of yesterday.

For every registration, this process involves multiple visits to the advisor, getting on waiting lists for classes, emailing professors, etc. It somehow always works out, but only after much anxiety and effort on her part. She will be studying abroad for 5 weeks this summer, taking two more classes in her major—I don’t know if that will make things better or worse!

D keeps thinking each time that the next registration will be easier, but it never is. Does it have to be this way? Any suggestions on what else she can do?

Wow, that seems crazy. Usually schools give priority to upperclassmen, so maybe you can hold out hope that as she gets older, she will be able to get those prized seats that she's been left out of.

I'm in a similar quandry; Case Western schedules by matriculation date, not by number of credit hours. So even though I currently have 67 credits, I have to register with the other freshmen because this is only my second semester here.

Last time I scheduled I got stuck in an 8:30 am Wednesday bio lab, which meant I had to drop my 3 MWF morning classes I was going to take, one of which is a major-required course. I won't be able to do that this upcoming semester, so I'm worried about what will happen. It doesn't help that I'm on the varsity swim team & have to schedule around our practices.
