Freshman Science Honors Program

Hi everyone, I just got a letter inquiring about the Freshman Science Honors Program. Is any1 else considering doing this, and has anybody heard anything about it?
Thanks!

There really isn’t much to it, its simply a replacement for the intro Biology/Chemistry classes that are taken in a smaller class with a smaller group of people that excelled in high school and were selected for FSH. A higher percentage of the class gets As/Bs compared to the regular sections but you’re also competing against a “smarter” group of people. The material presented is nearly the same and the labs are with only FSH people.

@ War Chant thanks! If you are competing against a smarter group of people, how do more people get As? Is there a better curve?

Overall, they give out more As/Bs than the regular section so you’re essentially guaranteed an A or a B for being in FSH but since the people are “smarter” persay, the B might be an A in the regular section. I only say this because if you’re pre-med like most people are, As > Bs and you need at least a 3.5 (an A- is 3.7) to be competitive for MD admissions (lower for DO). I don’t mean to scare you but some people see Honors and think it will look better but in reality, it doesn’t matter which section you take as long as you do well in either. Of course, this is highly subjective and grades always depend on individual performance which will ultimately determine your grade.

Yes, the curve is set higher and a larger group of people get A/B grades than in the regular sections. The curve in the regular sections is typically set around a B-/C+ and half the students get that grade or lower.

Yea I hope to go pre-med so I care about As more than “prestige” of class. Would you recommend regular then?

The decision is yours, I can’t make that decision for you. That being said, you can always start in FSH and if things don’t go well in the fall you can always drop to the regular sections during the spring but not vice versa. Keep in mind that individual performance will always determine your grades regardless of the curve.

Actually you can go the other way too- from regular to FSH. If you perform well first semester (A) you may get another email about joining-- it happened to D and several of her friends/floormates.

Thanks so much @camomof3 and @ War Chant. @camomof3 did you daughter find the honors section 2nd semester harder than the regular section first semester?

Oh okay, I stand corrected, I took those classes 5-6 years ago…

She didn’t do FSH either semester because the classes were too early in the morning- they were like at 9 and the regular classes had sections at 11 or later.
