With just one week left before I attend Orientation, I have yet to make up my mind as to whether I will do the Thematic Option (TO), Freshman Science Honors (FSH), or both.

I am pretty sure I want to do FSH because I am probably going to do pre-med and I love science. My dilemma is on TO. I am a hard-working person, and I usually don't procrastinate, but I don't want to kill myself my first year at college. Do medical schools really care if you do honors for non-science courses? Do any current students have any advice for me or anyone else considering these programs? Thanks, guys!

Some people I know in TO, and I know alot of them, question it's usefulness. I think the biggest perk is getting both writing requirements out of the way freshman year.

The reason that I really love TO is for the actual classes. They are taught by some of the best teachers at the university, and I have found all of them to be fascinating. I know that I prefer them to any other classes that I have taken in college. If you are a good reader and can write efficiently, you will be fine in TO. However, if you hate reading, you will be miserable. Keep that in mind.

Just do both. I am, and I'm honestly not that smart (as my pride shrieks in horror). I just do my school work when I need to, and in the case of my English classes the last two years, I've had to work hard for just about the duration of both of them. I'm doing premed too, Neuroscience to be exact, and I've heard that doing honors coursework (even if it's not in the sciences) looks great on those med school applications. They actually like to see you challenge yourself outside of the sciences, because it shows how well-rounded you are. The trick is to do WELL in those classes - my guess is an average of ~3.5. I could be off either way, though. But anyways, I would try it. Challenge yourself. You'll be rewarded for it in the end.
