Freshman Summer Start Program

so is anyone considering attending the FSSP? or has anyone attended before & would recommend it?

it sounds like a good way to get to know people & courses before college actually starts but its like $5000 so... do you guys think it's worth it?

I did it. And I loved it. I would say it’s one of the best times I’ve had at UCSB. You feel like you know everybody, because it’s summer and there aren’t that many people on campus. Summer classes are way easier to take compared to regular academic quarters. The syllabi are most likely cut short. I would recommend you to take writing classes in summer, because it’s so much easier to get a writing class in summer. But you have to remember that it’s only for six weeks and it’s very fast paced.

thanks so much! =]
my parents said today that they don’t mind the $5000 cuz it sounds like a great way to start my college experience. although six weeks doesn’t sound like a short time period to me.
also i was looking at taking the writing classes, what type of writing does it mean? like how to write good college papers or like other types of writing? cuz i was looking into the english/literature courses as that’s the major i applied for (hopefully in the CCS)

Oh, trust me. Six weeks goes by VERY fast.

Since you’re applying to the CCS Literature program, I assume you have taken either AP Eng Comp or AP Eng Lit. What did you get on them?

If you got a 3 on either of them, you have fulfilled the entry level writing exam. You can take Writing 2.

If you got a 4 on either of them, you can take Writ 50 or Writ 109 series. I definitely do not recommend you to take 50. It’s a waste of time. And 109 series are for upperclassmen. So you might need to wait a couple of years. But if you’re in CCS, it doesn’t matter for you then, because CCS students can take classes regardless of their pre-reqs.

If you got a 5 on either of them, you have already fulfilled GE Area 1. You don’t have to take any writing class. But I would still recommend you to take one of the 109 classes during your junior year at UCSB. They’re great resources.

Well actually I take English A1 Higher Level for IB and I’m getting like a 5 or 6 out of 7 in it (depending on how my final exams go I might even get a 7). I’m not sure where that leaves me? Thanks for the advice though =]

It’s the same thing actually.
IB 5 = AP 3
IB 6 = AP 4
IB 7 = AP 5
All of the points I mentioned above apply to the corresponding IB scores.

wow thank you so much =] guess i don’t need to take the entry level writing exam then

i’ve been here the last two summers taking classes, not as a freshman though but from what i saw you meet a lot of people and the dorm you stay at is almost right next to the beach and it was fixed up only a couple years ago, plus its not a lot of people so you will get to know the campus and community and the other freshman that are there. Also you eat in the dining commons so there is more socialization there.
