Buildings that use laundry cards will issue you a card that can be refilled using cash or a credit card. Ask at the Customer Service Center for your building.

There's a fee to get a replacement card if you lose your first one.

I thought that you could just use your USC card for the laundry - is this not true? Do you need to have a separate laundry card, too?

I was under the same impression, that you put discretionary cash on your USC card to do the laundry? Clarification would be appreciated. Thanks!

It varies by building. Others on this thread have said that Parkside will accept either the laundry card or discretionary funds on a USCard.

I know at Cardinal Gardens, the machines will only accept laundry cards that are from the contractor that owns the washers and dryers. These cards cannot be loaded using discretionary funds, but rather via a payment kiosk in the lobby of the building. This kiosk accepts cash or credit cards.

i bump this up to the present, because someone recently posted a question about "what to bring". This is one thread (about what to bring) from last year that had some helpful suggestions....

So, bulletin boards come with the dorm, right? What about dry erase boards for the front door?

Is Marks Tower a card system as well? Thanks.

yep.

dry erase boards don't come with the room, but yes on the tack boards...they're pretty big too, which is nice.

as for the list that USC provided, it's pretty solid...but i didn't need some of the things on that list, despite bringing a few of them (note that i'm a guy):
-Answering Machine
-Bicycle & Lock (because i skateboarded, but i know a lot of people who used bikes)
-Board Games
-Comb & Brush (one word: hands :D)
-Film (digicam should do you fine)
-Hairdryer
-Hammer & Nails (screwdriver is critical though, i've found, and a ratchet set might come in handy at times)
-Wastebasket (they should have one in the room)

FOR ANYONE WITH A MAC AT USC, what did you bring to connect to the Ethernet? My Macbook will have that Airport card thing, but do I need any cables or stuff? What did you get?

i don't have a Mac, but a lot of my friends did...although that has little/nothing to do with what i'm going to tell you because the whole process is pretty universal :p just standard Cat-5 Ethernet cable will work fine. at least in the dorm rooms/suites themselves (not counting lobbies), there's no wireless allowed, and even if you try you probably won't get any connection that's reliable/strong enough to use (my friends have tried, doesn't tend to work to well). but as for the rest of campus, there's wireless all over.

What do you mean wireless isn't allowed?

if you want wireless in the dorms you can just get a small wireless router such as an Airport Express and create your own network.

Setting up a personal wireless network is prohibited by ITS and they claim to have the ability to block wall jacks that are providing access to more than one MAC address. This is what Phobos meant by "wireless isn't allowed".

However, a few dorms enjoy spill-over Wifi from nearby buildings and common areas. As long as you get a signal, there are no restrictions on where you can use the school's "USC Wireless" network.

They cannot block addresses manually. It is done automatically when more than one MAC (physical address, nothing to do with Apple) address attempts to connect on the same port. When you register your computer, simply input the MAC address of your router, NOT your computer. This will allow you to connect as many wireless devices as you want to the internet through the router. Since they are all being routed through the router, the network will only see the one address of the router, and will thus not deny service.

Easy as cake.

And it may be prohibited, but there is really no way for ITS to know about it.

Can you change the MAC address you have registered with ITS if you get a router (I mean, new computer...) halfway through the school year?

I would certainly assume so. This would seem a necessary provision for the many students who must surely replace their laptops mid-year.
