Youre fine. According to [Some Facts and Statistics](http://www.yale.edu/oir/factsheettemp.pdf), the average age in Yale College is 20.
Curiously, Ill be 16 years old when I begin my undergraduate education (and Im already in [an early college entrance program](Early entrance to college - Wikipedia)).

The average age at Yale College is 20 because students there typically range in age from 18 to 22, the average of which is 20. This doesn’t mean that most freshmen (who are obviously at the lower end of the age spectrum) are 20 years old.

That said, I don’t think you’ll stand out that much as a 20-year-old. :)

Well, once the first semester begins most freshmen will be 18 and will turn 19 sometime during the course of the academic year.

I’ll be nineteen for the duration of freshman year - I took two gap years. :)

Nobody will notice or care until you’re old enough to buy them beer.

^I believe that you actually make a perfectly valid point.

wow, person who posted the wikipedia page. just wow.

and honestly, age is so subjective. there are many 20 year olds who are less immature than 16 year olds. much more important is the environment in which you develop your personality, and the person you turn out to be.

I’ll be 16 at the beginning of my freshman year. I think age is pretty unimportant and the fact that I’ll be younger than most people isn’t really intimidating. I actually want to defer for a year though, because I’m really in no rush, but my parents won’t let me. It’s also kind of weird to think that I’ll be able to drink legally only in my senior year.

^^ I’ll be 16 during my freshman year as well. I spoke with an admin officer about it and was surprised to find out how common this is. I think she said a sixth of the entering class would be under 17.

Wow that’s a lot.

that is a lot of young people! i will be eighteen for most of my freshman year, like most people, but if you’re older i don’t think it will be a big deal.

1/6 under 17? wow. I’ll be 17 entering and turning 18 later. And I thought I was kinda young.

^ Don’t quote me on that. It was either 1/6th or 1/8th. And I’m not sure if she meant they are under 17 during the summer of their acceptance or just during the fall.

still, 1/6 or 1/8th. that’s alot of yalies starting early/skipping grades or something.

I’ve heard of freshman here who are already 21. Don’t feel old…
