Living in the suburbs, I have a car that I was going to sell to help with college expenses (based on the premise that I would be in a city next year). I'm getting a lot of money at Michigan, so that helps and I feel like a car would be necessary (or at least advantageous) in Ann Arbor. Also, what is the policy on freshmen having cars (or students in general) and any available parking?

Having a car really isn't necessary. You can get to pretty much anywhere in the city you need to get to by the bus system, and the buses are free for all U of M students. Personally, I think you're better off just not having a car freshmen year. But if you still want to have one...

Another option would just be to park your car on the street in a nearby residential neighborhood. I personally don't think this is a good long-term parking solution, but it's possible. Just keep in mind that certain neighborhoods near campus require a residential permit to park there, since residents got fed up with commuters taking up the parking spaces outside their house.

What I did my sophomore year was I had a friend with a parking spot but no car at her apartment complex. I just kept my car there for free, as long as I was occasionally willing to drive her places. It'd be hard to pull off freshmen year, but by sophomore year if you're still in the dorms you'll have a much easier time finding someone to pull that off with.
