Cars at uMich

How many freshmen have cars, what are the rules for them, and are they a convenience or inconvenience?

From what I hear having a car Freshmen year is a realy pain in the arse. At the welcome day students told me that the Ann Arbor police didn't have a problem giving out parking tickets and recommended not bringing a car unless you have a guaranteed parking space. Public transportation over there seemed pretty reliable (I'm from NYC, it's terrible over here), not having a car doesn't seem like the end of the world. : ]

I second that. From my past year, having a car is a large inconvenience the vast majority of the time. Buying a parking spot is very expensive and generally unnecessary since you wouldn't need a car most of the time. Tickets and being towed is very real, and some have joked that's why Ann Arbor doesn't make more parking available--they're making too much money through ticketing. In addition, the public TheRide buses are free to all UofM students just by showing them your Mcard and they can take you as far as Ypsi.

well, as an out of state student, driving my car and parking it is going to be much less of an inconvenience than spending lots of $$ on airfare every time I go home.

actually..if you book your tix ahead of time.....flying can be very reasonalbe...almost as cheap or cheaper than driving (think gas prices). Try northwestern or southwest. very reasonable. I'm from the chicago area, so i'm seriously investigating taking the train to ann arbor for breaks and w/e.

I have a gaurantee on my parking spot cause I live in an apartment and its included with the whole package and all. I live in Toledo, Ohio so I want a car because its only a measley 30 min away from home. So a car is no problemo for me.

Don't bring a car unless you're living in an apartment where parking is provided. There's no campus parking for freshmen -- so if you live in the dorm (as 98% of freshmen do) and bring a car, you're going to have to rent a parking space - which will be expensive and your parking space isn't going to be anywhere near your dorm. There are campus buses and the city bus is free for students. If you need to get home on weekends or whatever, you can use the rideboard.

I'm guessing that soph/jr transfers that are living in the dorms will also have the same parking problems...? I would like to bring my car not to drive around every week, but just to have the option of getting in and out of Ann Arbor as I please. I wouldn't even care if I had to walk a mile to my car to use it every now and then, but I'd like to have it there nonetheless. So do I have any options or should I just treat myself like another freshmen?

If you bring a car w/out a parking space you will be ticked and towed - often.

It's a fact. They really are nazi's.

you can try to buy a spot from some1, or if you know some1 who lives in ann arbor that would be convenient.

As a soph/jr transfer, if you live in Baits or Bursley or Northwood apartments (on North Campus), you may be able to get a parking spot.
