was umich harder than you expected? easier? are you excited to go back in january? how was it, generally speaking?

It was definitely easier than I expected. People say how college is like so much harder and different from high school, but it really isn't. My coursework here has been basically the same as in high school, so it hasn't been hard at all. I'm really excited to go back, and it's been an awesome experience so far.

Classes were not too bad. Basically, if I studied, I did well.

Biggest complaint academically is that I did a lot of self-teaching this term. I know this is college and that self-teaching is expected, but I did not learn anything from my calc III professor and I had to go out of my way to get some questions answered.

Intro level classes are too big. It's frustrating to go to office hours (held in an auditorium), see 100 other people, and wait one hour before your question gets answered.

It was a good semester. More sleep would have been better. More free time would have been better. More girls/random hookups would have also been better.

chibears...how was the social life first semester? how were the parties? (if you don't party...nvm)

parikhs, I don't party, but my roommates and everyone in my hall does, and they seemed to have a blast. And even though I don't party, the social life was awesome because I live in a quad, and since we're 4 studs in that room, it kind of became the social center for the floor, so there were always people in my room, and we were always playing a game or playing music or watching tv/movies together. It was really a lively, loving, vibrant atmosphere.

Thanks chibears..sounds tight.

astronomy 101 sucks

UMrunner08: I'm thinking of taking astronomy 101 next yr at uofm and i was wondering why u think astro 101 sux.

A friend of mine said astromony 102 was better than 101, which is why I'm taking 102 this semester. I don't remember his reasoning off hand. However, when I personally looked at the course descriptions, 102 seemed more interesting to me as well.

The profs for astro 101 were boring and it seemed like they ONLY knew what was in the book. Also, the powerpoint presentations during class were designed for the course by the makers of the textbook, so the profs basically read what was up there with little or no explanations. It got to a point where I decided to spend my time doing something more worthwhile, so I frequently skipped and just studied the book on my own. The first test was easy, but the second one and the final were impossible. The multiple choice questions are set up to trick you, with almost every question having two possible correct answers. The homework assignments require you to search the text for the answers and then paraphrase the book's explanation.... complete busy work. My GSI sucked as well.... very unhelpful and crabby. I would seriously avoid this class.

Being premed at UM is hard as hell..lets just say that, unless ur cherrybarry who can easily ace organic chem, haha

and.. engineering? :)
