I'm looking to buy a laptop for next year, but i'm assuming its better to buy it through the school? Are their laptops the suggest? or do you just buy one from the book store?

If you want a Mac, you will get the best price through the book store (you’ll get Cornell’s discount, better than student discount from Apple). They usually run a special around the senior week (end of May). I would call them up, give them the spec, and order it over the phone instead of online. They may even tell you what they have on special over the phone. I have bought 4 Macs from them.

what about non-mac laptops? does the cornell store offer discounts? I’m an international student, so can I wait till I’m there in August to settle it?

https://estore.cornell.edu/c-296-laptop.aspx

They offer Dell and HP. I would pre-order, so it would be ready for you to pick up when you arrive. For Mac, it was few weeks before it was ready.

Are you guys kidding? It’s much cheaper to buy laptops from Amazon. And Macs… what a rip-off. Do some research before buying your laptop.

macs, i agree, are a ripoff, but amazon? I would say Newegg.com is the best.

My first and last experience with Newegg wasn’t good so I told myself to never buy anything from them again

If you are getting a Mac (like I am), I would wait til OS X Lion comes out sometime during the summer

apple also always gives free ipod touches (with a rebate) before new school years start plus $100-$200 off and a $100 rebate on a printer. And as gnr1516 said, wait until OS X Lion comes out.

Edit: and of course you can always sell that ipod touch online for close to $200

When we were on campus some of the students said that if they had bought their laptops through the cornell store they got fast on-campus service when they needed it – seems like that might be worth paying a bit extra for the machine to get.

psh. Really? Cheap laptops from Amazon and Newegg? Apple?

Go on eBay!

eBay, pssh, local tag sales, that’s where it’s at!

Lol, I’m joking, but I don’t trust eBay. And I need a warranty on my laptop, plus I want to be able to return the laptop in case it’s deffected.
