Freshmen orientation

Hi! For those upperclassmen (specifically Stern), I was wondering if parents are invited to the optional freshmen orientation in July?

I was hearing that nothing is planned for parents, so what exactly are they supposed to do all day while the students are in orientation? My parents are driving to NYU with me this upcoming monday and they were hoping to hear from advisors about what classes I should register and how the dorms are gonna look. Thanks!

I went to my son's first day of orientation for CAS in June. There was a breakfast reception for parents, then a Q&A session, then a break for lunch, then the opportunity to tour some of the buildings. I visited The Palladium recreation center since my son hopes to get into U-Hall. My son, and I believe most of the freshmen there for orientation, stayed at Hayden. My husband and I were not permitted in to see the dorms, since most of them were either closed for the summer or in use for the orientation.

The parent orientation was worthwhile, though. They answered any question, from the need for laptops to the procedure for registering. As for courses, we left that up to my son and his orientation advisor. You won't know what you'll be able to register for until you take the placement exams and if you have all of your AP scores in anyway. My son found out after taking his placement exams that he placed out of math and science, and that he could start with advanced History (his major) and Spanish (foreign language requirement) only after sitting down with his advisor and going over his options.

Enjoy your orientation!
