I think I'm in love with your schedule, aquasocks. (Did I mention I'm not as put off by one word titles that involve History or English?) Hopefully I can do something similar to that.

Thanks for sharing everyone. It's really helpful.

Thanks for all the great responses. Would you say that the tendency is to take classes geared toward your major or to take more of a wide variety?

depends on 2 things mainly. the first is whether or not you feel like getting rid of a good number of GE's and other requirements in the first year (versus spreading them out throughout the 4 years). the second is whether or not courses in your major are actually offered or available, which can alter your schedule.

as you approach junior year and the upper div classes for your major, do you still have time to enroll in "fun" classes that you are interested in? cause i feel like i want to do more ges then what is required, and complete a major and possibly 1 or 2 minors.

yeah you should unless you only take like 12 units a quarter

i remember you teling me this before..but namaste, how many units are you enrolled in this quarter?

15 you (10 char)

what are "wac" classes

im not using slang. im talking abotu classes which are classified as wac100a, etc

World Arts and Cultures

thanks. do you know what department thats under?

I believe that's the name of the department itself.

My freshmen year (last year):

Fall: (16 Units)
Anthro 8: Intro to Archaeology
Linguistics 1: Introduction to Study of Language
Geography 2: Biogeography in a changing world
Fiat Lux on Africa

Winter: (17 Units)
Sociology 1: Intro to...
French 41: French Cinema
Communication Studies 10: Intro to...
Comm 10 Honors Section
Fiat Lux on the World Trader Center

Spring: (12 Units)
Film and Television 106A: Intro to American Motion Picture
Poli Sci 40: Intro to American Government
Fiat Lux on Los Angeles in Cinema

So that was my first year. First quarter was probably my hardest (at least that was when my GPA was the lowest). By Winter Quarter, you'll start to get the hang of things. I guess at first glance it looks like my Spring Quarter was really easy, and it was, academically.

But taking fewer classes allowed me to get really involved - I worked really hard at the Daily Bruin and ended up being promoted to an assistant editor position. It allowed me to work harder in the classes that I had, allowing me to earn a 4.0 and boost my GPA, which I think is the reason I managed to get into Comm. I also had a lot of fun, and was able to do stuff like go to Disneyland and goof off with friends, which is really important your freshmen year. If you want my advice, working harder to develop your resume/not get too stressed/get better grades is TOTALLY worth the sacrifice of taking one less class. So obviously you can't do that all of college, but seriously, if you wanna have an easy quarter every once and a while, I say go for it.

Also, make sure and take classes you enjoy. There are classes you can just take because they satisfy a GE or they sound easy, but those won't be the ones you remember. For example, I was going to take Arts and Architecture 10 because I'd heard all the rumors about how it's like impossible to get below an A+. But I decided to take an upper division film class (which was AWESOME... highly recommend you guys take it for one of your arts GE's), and it not only satisfied the same GE, but will count towards one of my upper division requirements for Communication Studies. Same thing for French Cinema. It satisfied Literary Analysis and all my friends took Classics 10, but I took that instead, and it was also enjoyable.

So yeah, hope your freshmen year rocks!

Wow, your freshmen schedule seems so perfect for me. It has everything I love in it and want to take. (Poli Sci 40, Film 106a which my OC wouldn't let me take, Comm 10, Linguistics and Geography. Plus French 41 which I am taking my this quarter). Right now I am sadly attempting to get rid fo GE requirements.

I hope I get lucky enough to take them all this year! Thanks for sharing, it gave me some good insight into being able to take the classes I really want to take.

Glad I could help! What's your major, by the way? I'm Comm/Polisci minor (maybe double major if I feel up to it)

Yeah, I definitely suggest you take Film 106A. I'm not sure if it's offered Winter but probably will be in Spring. I'm sure you could've handled it this quarter, but it's something you can look forward to taking later. There was almost no reading and participation in section is worth the same percentage-wise as the final! So it's fun and not that stressful.

Comm 10 wasn't exactly my favorite class. I worked my ass off and ended up with a B+. But I got into the major so I guess that's what matters. So yeah, unless you're a Comm major I wouldn't rush into that unless you love memorization.

Soc 1 with Terri Anderson was an AWESOME class. It's pretty popular - It filled up this quarter before the first orientation session even took place, so I'm guessing it's mostly 2nd years taking it Fall 06. But I'd really reccomend you take that - I've never felt so motivated to do the reading, and every day in class was so fascinating.

Poli Sci and considering switching to Comm actually. I was thinking of Comm 10 to help me decide if I wanted to pursue the major, and was also looking at taking Comm M70, since language origins are really interesting to me. Is there a better class then Comm 10 to give me a good idea of what the Comm major will be like? I don't mind difficult classes.

I figured with Film it'd be easier just to make my OC happy and take it another quarter then to try arguing about it. It's basically the top class on my list to take in college, since I'm such a film lover.

I hadn't heard much about the Soc classes, so I'm glad to hear Soc 1 comes with a good recommendation. I'll def try to fit it into my schedule. :)

Yeah, if you're interested in Comm, I wouldn't suggest looking to Comm 10 to get a sense of the major. Most of the people I've talked to further along in the major have told me it's not a very good example of what the upper divs are like. Basically, a lot of people come to UCLA wanting to major in Comm, and Comm 10 is the weeder course that they use to discourage people from applying. It's a lot of memorization whereas upper div Comm classes are more analysis.

M70 might be good. You should go on registrar and read about the upper division classes in the major and see if they sound interesting to you. You can always go sit in on them too.
