Can any current Bruins post what they took their freshmen year at UCLA and how it worked out for them? I'm just curious to see what sort of courses people enrolled in....

fall: biotech cluster, history 8A, ess7, band, law fiat lux
winter: biotech cluster, econ1, psych 10, edu 92F, stats fiat lux, history fiat lux
spring: biotech cluster seminar, global studies 1, edu 143 (high school advising!), 2 history fiat luxes

poli sci major, but you obviously can't tell from my course selection

wow I didn't know you can take band as a class... how was it, and what was the class like?

i took music 90M, which is marching band. 2 units.

there's a lot of other ones out there. orchestra, symphonic band, ethnomusicology classes, etc. check the catalog or schedule of classes to see what's offered.

usually a good way to keep playing your instrument (sucks how so many people stop playing in college), meet new friends, and get 2 units of A's hehe.

kevin, you had a real intense schedule... 20 units?

yeah 20 units some quarters. you guys enjoy college life and take a regular unit load. it was more fun and relaxing when i finally did haha.

namaste, i havent been on CC in quite a while, what's your real name again? or are u one of my friends who's secretly on CC then reveals it to me one day and i'm like "OMG you're on CC too?!" cuz that's happened too many times this past year LOL.

since you're a poli sci major you have to take 20 units sometimes i imagine since poli sci classes fill up extraorindary quick... no i'm not a secret friend of yours, i just found you on facebook so i know your first name.

kfc4u, do you think this would be too much for the first quarter?

econ1, math31B, eng comp3, and whichever Chinese course I get tested into

[/quote]

nope; should be quite manageable. if youre not having enough fun, just drop eng comp3 and take it another quarter.

do note that if you get tested into a chinese above 1A, you'll have to wait till the quarter that the class is offered (winter for 2A and 5A, spring for 3A and 6A, although 4A is offered in the fall)

so have a backup in mind in case you dont have to take chinese this quarter

alright, thanks for you opinion :)

Fall: CS 31, Math 31A, Chem 20A
Winter: CS 32, Math 31B, Physics 1A
Spring: CS 33, Math 32A, Physics 1B

I had originally taken four classes for Winter/Spring, but CS 32/33 robbed me of them.

flopsy's schedule looks so clean and organized. my schedule was a mess. partially cuz poli sci classes were full. but also partially cuz the biotech cluster had a horrible timing that conflicted with several other classes that i wanted to take

would i also be able to get feedback please? Is this manageable for the first quarter:

German 1
German 50B
Phil 21
Econ 1

i wanted a comp lit class, but it was already filled.. jeez. Also, would this pattern work for every quarter? (language, GE, pre-req major A, pre-req major B)

If we get tested into Chinese 4A... can we take it during the fall even though the placement test is during fall?

Why does everyone seem to take "high school" like classes at first? Econ, math, chem? Does anyone bother ever taking History of American Film? Because seriously, if I had your schedules I would absolutely die of boredom.

Any thoughts? Is it not "normal" to take classes with more then one word in the title Freshman year?

well, as boring as they are, mostly it's cause they are prereqs for the more advanced classes...you need to build a foundation first.

it depends on what youre majoring in. a lot of pre-meds want to finish their math, chem, and life science sequences first so they can go take MCAT prep. a lot of econ majors want to have some econ classes under their belt so they can apply for some internships.

for those with a lesser immediate need, then we dont HAVE to take the "high school-like" classes first. my first year schedule included classes like "history of colonial latin america," "space weather," and "high school advising." although if i took any political science classes, that wouldn't count as a "one-word class" would it? hehe ;)

yes. the placement test is a few days before school starts. there should be still some spots available even if you're enrolling after the placement test.

this schedule seems a little heavier on reading and may require some work, but it should be okay, esp. since your 4th class is language that youre interested in. it's heavier than what someone might try on their first quarter, but still manageable.

yes. my recommendation is to balance your schedule with GE/requirements and your major (classes that youre interested in). but different methods of scheduling work for different people too though, so see if this strategy works for you.

do bio majors have to take LS1 before LS2? It seems all the LS2 classes are full.

no, those two are not sequential actually. do note that you need chem 14A or 20A as a requisite to take LS2 though.

interesting, thanks.
