My son is very interested in the freshman seminars which were listed in the copy of The Thresher sent in his O-week packet. There's one that's of particular interest. Since they seem to cap enrollment at 15 students or so, how does one go about getting into these seminars? Do you sign up during O-week? Is it first come, first serve? Should he try to contact the professor prior to O-week?

He can sign up for the freshman seminars during O-Week registration. There are two registration windows for freshman… they are randomly assigned. The windows are randomly assigned only during 1st semester registration. Registration for 2nd semester and the rest of his time by Rice is done by credit hours… if he has a lot of AP credit hours, then your son will be able to register at an earlier registration window than freshmen without AP credits. Most of the professors, from my experience, will be willing to accommodate an extra student or two… your son will just have to fill out an extra form.

I hope your son is excited for Rice… he will have an AMAZING time during O-Week! Brown is known especially for having a great O-Week.

To add to slik nik’s already comprehensive answer:

If they do fill up, you can always go to the first day of class and see if the professor will sign your add form. They have a cap for online registration, but the professor can go above that.

In this case - you could email the professor. I have never, in my years at college, seen anything negative come from emailing a professor. Worst case scenario he says no and you have to wait and see what happens at registration. As a result, Id say go ahead and express interest.

Good luck!
