I'm a rising sophmore and I just wasted my whole summer with out doing anything that would help a college application. So just wondering what did you do during your freshmen summer?? Or do most people waste there freshmen summer. Hoping to do something next summer

Try not to waste it completely. i did a little volunteering, and took a math class to advance in school.
Even if you think youll have more productive summers later on, it doesn't hurt to use the time you have now to get started. volunteering, sports, camp whatever

I took summer geometry for 6 weeks. That was fun. ::grumble:: At least my teacher gave us a ton of breaks (during which we got ourselves banned from our own building because of some "exploring").

That's really about it. The rest of the time I goofed off with friends. Oh, and I went to my school's soccer camp, which was a big waste since I ended up cut anyway (unfairly, I might add).

I agree with cherrycoke.

I am volunteering at Jefferson Hospital down at Philadelphia and doing summer training for X-Country. I am also reading through Campbell's bio to prep for SAT II bio in October and AP later next year, and learning some precalculus.

Besides all that, I'm also having fun hanging with my friends and going to Washington D.C. and the Grand Canyon.

I went to lacrosse camp for the first week of summer, and then I attended a three week Writing Workshop at Phillips Andover. For the remainder of the summer I interned at the State House for my district's State Senator.

Try getting a volunteer position at your local hospital. I've done it before, and all I had to do was go in and talk to the Volunteer Coordinator about areas I was interested in, and the next day I was working there. It's pretty no-frills, with no application or anything. If nothing else, just read a lot of good books, hang out with friends, and enjoy the free time while you can.

I sorta wish I was as college-conscious as you all my freshman year.

It seems like most high schools have summer reading lists. There is still time for you to do some of that. Does your school have a website with a summer reading list on it?

You can start researching summer 2006 opportunities just by searching the CC threads to see what programs or ECs sound interesting to you.
There is so much incredible information on CC !!!

I'm a procrastinor and I still wouldn't allow myself to put any thought on colleges yet---especially when I am on my precious summer vacation...

I did a couple of productive things I guess. I self taught myself astronomy and bought a telescope. I am writing a story to be published in a children's literature magazine. I am starting out on another more earnest story that I plan to turn into a novel. Basically I'm getting myself involved in lots of writing this summer. I have some time to hang out with friends at CT, Atlanta and several more places in NE. Otherwise Im home writing away during the day and stargazing at night.

I took Genetics at Carlisle from CTY. Other than that, just band camp at the end of the summer for marching band.

Right now I'm being a lazy bum at home, but I've been slowly plodding through that blue SAT prep book from College Board. I'm doing the practice tests in 10 Real SAT's, even though they're old, too.

I would volunteer at the hospital, but I'm not old enough, ugh.

Hmmm... I remember that pleasent summer. I did a lot of swimming, started planning out self-studying AP calc, and built a chess engine. The movies and ideas that would come to form my Siemens and ISEF project also started. That and I installed Linux on a 15 year old machine, which was the biggest pain in the ass ever, and I ended up frying the video card because I accidentally plugged in the CD rom power supply from the wrong spot, and now its useless. Just enjoy yourselves.

This summer for me was a summer of improvement... I have a month to read 6 books I assigned myself to read... lol.

Does going on vacation overseas count as wasting your summer? If so, then I did.

But I also went to a Basketball camp for 3 weeks, and now I am taking personal training classes for tennis.

:)

I participated in a pre-college program called CTY (sponsored by Johns Hopkins University). It doesn't help one's college application, but it's a really great experience (both intellectually and socially). I would take the time to pursue something that you're curious about but never have time to look into during the school year, be it art or a language or activism or theater. If you live near a big city, get involved with the activities there. For example, this summer, I've been going to D.C. often for museum programs, university lectures, nonprofit-sponsored seminars, and documentary showings, most of which are free. They really gave me detailed insight into global issues that I've been curious about.

Have u guys ever thought about enjoying life. During my freshman summer, I worked hard to make my summer the best. I still got into a top 25 college. It's all about enjoying life and pursuign what you like. That is what I did.

I danced for about four hours every single day. I took classes at the local community college. I went to dance intensive programs. I've been prepping for the PSAT, Sat, SAT II. Mainly the PSAT, because that is the closest in time for me.

rexrun467, thats possible only if you have not screwed up totally in your freshmen year and now must redeem yourself...

I didn't screw up in my freshmen year. I just love to dance. Also, I'm graduating early, so I don't have a second chance at taking the PSAT for scholarships, and I have to do well the first time. I'm enjoying the summer, and during all this I manage to hang out with my friends and all.

I did a pre-college program at Brown University. It probably won't make a huge difference on my colleg apps. Try to do some volunteering/community service.

I started out helping a disabled person that lives in my apartment complex but then he offered to pay me so now I have a job.

Why can't someone do volunteer work, attend seminars, take summer courses, etc. and pursue his or her passions at the same time?
